Harold (Hal) Allan Lamon, Jr.

Obituary

Harold Allan (Hal) Lamon, Jr. passed away on August 1, 2023 at the age of 90 following a stroke.

Hal was born in November 1932 in Seattle, WA to Harold Sr. and Ariel Ward Lamon.  Growing up near Lake Washington, he graduated from Franklin High School and received a bachelor’s degree in Business from the University of Washington.  A mutual friend introduced Hal to Joyce Borell in 1952, and they were married in June 1955.  After serving in the US Air Force, Hal & Joyce settled in South Seattle and opened the aptly named “Lamon’s Hardware” store in Normandy Park in 1959. In 1981 the store moved to Kent and opened as a much larger Meridian True Value.  Following an extended economic downturn the store closed in 1985 and Hal went to work at Boeing where he created and managed the Boeing Military Airplanes Small Business Program.  He retired from Boeing in 2000, enjoying the freedom that retirement has to offer.

While raising their three children and managing the store, Hal still found time to be involved in the community by volunteering with the Jaycees, Boy Scouts, and serving on the Highline Community College Board of Trustees.  In his later years, Hal & Joyce got involved with and eventually ran a local cribbage club and enjoyed traveling to various tournaments around the Pacific Northwest.  Hal was a Grand Master and a judge in the American Cribbage Congress.

Hal will be remembered for his willingness to help others, his sense of humor, the friends he made throughout his life, and his love of the outdoors.  Fishing, hiking, and camping were favorite passions that he would pursue at every opportunity.  He also enjoyed photography, gardening, scrap-booking, and matting and framing pictures and diplomas for his family.

Hal was preceded in death by his wife of almost 59 years, Joyce in 2014.  He is survived by daughters Debbie McCarty (Ron Andrus) of Puyallup and Diane Dorsey (Dan) of Redmond, son Allan Lamon (Petra) of Kirkland, and grandchildren Kurt Lamon, Elijah (EJ) and Sam Dorsey.  He is also survived by his dear friend Judy Humphreys.  A memorial will be held at 11:00am Saturday October 28th, at the Community Presbyterian Church of Buckley, 152 Cottage St, Buckley, WA 98321.  In lieu of flowers, remembrances of Hal may be made to the National Parks Conservation Association https://support.npca.org/page/41642/donate/1?ea.tracking.id=io5dl27h&_ga=2.214309268.221835729.1698077829-1295894319.1698077829 or the Humane Society https://www.thehumanesociety.org/donate/
