Helen passed away in Seattle on Feb. 3, 2016, the day after her 97th birthday. She was born Feb. 2, 1919, in Lodgepole, S.D., the third of Ludwig and Jennie Hedstrom’s six children. She married Merle W. Holbrook and they enjoyed 56 years of marriage until his death in 1998. Helen was a legal secretary before she and Merle bought two Travelodge’s, one in Pasco, Wash., and the other by the Space Needle in Seattle. Helen was a Grand Master in bridge, once beating Bill Gates in a duplicate hand at age 83. She also was a great cat lover, with Lulu the last in a long line of companions. Helen is survived by sister Bertha Marshall, daughters Cassandra Hall, Gwen Raney (Dennis Raney) and Janice Faull (Terrill Chang), eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. There will be an 11 a.m. memorial service on Saturday, Feb. 27, 2016, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 1215 Thomas Street, Seattle. Arrangements made by Bonney-Watson.
