Herman J. Scharer

December 31, 1921 - March 4, 2006

Obituary

Born on December 31, 1921 in Seattle, Washington, Herman John Scharer went to be with his Lord on March 4 after battling heart disease for many, many years.

Herman was a survivor. After growing up in the Great Depression and losing his mother to cancer, he entered the service at the age of 17. Only two years later he lost the first of three battleships, the West Virginia, in Pearl Harbor. Thought to be dead, he was placed on the beach with the casualties, only to be discovered days later to be alive. He then spent the next two years in the hospital, in a full body cast. After recovering from these injuries, he served another 18 years in the Navy, retiring in 1959 as a First Lieutenant, with the rank of Chief Warrant Officer. Although Herman left the military, the military never left him. His carriage and demeanor befit an officer, one to be respected in authority.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; his sons, William, Thomas, and Jon; and 7 grandchildren.

Herman lived his faith by serving as a Deacon in the Presbyterian Church of America and as a Discussion Leader in Bible Study Fellowship. His hobbies included leather carving, and gardening, tree-grafting, or re-fighting the wars with his buddy BJ. His favorite passage in the Bible was Psalm 23.

I served with “Bos’n Scharer while I was aboard the U.S.S. Windham Bay, cve-92 from May 1951 through August 15, 1954. I was a Quartermaster 2nd Class. I always respected and admired him. He was a kind, and firm leader of men. My condolences go to his family. May God Bless you all and may Herman’s soul rest in Peace!

My sympathy to Bos’n Sharer’s family. I served with him in 1953-1954 aboard the U.S.S. Windham Bay and will tell you that he was the most professional officer that I had the privilege to serve with. He was a great guy and, I am sure, will be missed by all that were close to him at the end.
