You could not ask for a better father and grandfather. He was always willing to help with any problem. I’m so blessed to have had him in my life. He loved a good hot mocha and a Mariner baseball game.

Thanks Grandpa for teaching me to fish and for sharing the highball jokes. I am thankful I have my Grandfather’s sense of humor. There’s no body else I would rather cook breakfast for; eggs sunny side up. I love you always!

Archie was a great father to me. I enjoyed our fishing trips, our trip to Spring Training, going out to coffee, fixing lawn mowers and just spending time with him.

He enjoyed spending time with the grandchildren – taking them fishing, attending their ballgames – even going to Tifton, GA to watch his granddaughter play.

I’m going to miss him and especially our phone calls each night. Love, your son, Paul

Dad,

You took on a huge job of helping mom raise 5 kids. You did a wonderful job. You hung in there through many trials and, of course, all the fun things that come with so many of us involved in school and sports. I, especially, loved sharing baseball with you and really appreciated all of your fishing trips, our camping and hunting trips at the cabin at Lake Kachess and just spending time with our kids. We shared a love also for animals. I know Max will miss you lots. Thank you for being mine and Don’s friend and confidant when we needed you. Rest in peace. We love you.

Grandpa, thanks for the fishing trip at Angle Lake, you had a lot of patience with me even when I got tangled up in your line. Thanks for all the ballgames you took time to attend. Even coming out to Tacoma when our high school softball team made district and state. Everyone at the ballfield always knew whose grandfather you were, when you weren’t there they always asked about you. You will truly be missed.

Love Always ,

Gayle Jo

Grandpa,

I miss you and I truely regret not being able to spend more time with you. I hope that my phone calls and quarter collecting showed you how much I loved you even though I couldn’t be there. When the Mariners are playing and not doing well, I will call them scuzz buckets for you. You were the only Grandpa I ever knew and you absence will be greatly felt. I love and miss you and I am glad you’re in a place where there is no more pain. I love you.

Dad! Thank you so much for being my father! I was just a little girl when you met mom, and walked into my life! You are the only father I’ve known and raised me like your own child! Thank you!

Just like my brother’s and sister’s have shared, I best remember our fishing and camping trips. Some of the best times in my life were spent at places like Lake Cresent and Lake Kachess. I also remember those LONG car rides down south and remember all the sleep I got! But well worth the ride once we arrived! :-

Well dad, here’s to you, one more scoop of ice cream drenched in Hershey’s syrup! Rest in peace, and I’ll listen for your bell!

Love always, your daughter Kathy

Grandpa,

I am so blessed to have had a wonderful grandfather in my life.

I remember coming over to visit you and Grandma on the weekends. I could always find where you were by following the smell of your sweet cigars! Usually down in the basement tinkering with some machine!

I also remember no matter if we were at King’s Table Buffet or anywhere in Burien you knew SOMEONE! You always had friends wherever we went, and if you didn’t know anyone you soon became friends with someone, and we could always spot you in a crowd with your sideways hat and rainbow suspenders!

Thank you for being a one of a kind Grandpa that we will miss! Love you! xoxo your Granddaughter Jennie ;-

Archie was a really great guy and I am glad I got to know him, even if it was only in his last weeks. He seemed to have a lot of kindness in him and was happy to share it with those around him, wherever he went. He is missed.

Archie was a good man, glad I got to spend a whole month getting to know him better, watching the mariners get whipped, and talking baseball. Couldnt ask for a better great-grandfather, hope he is happy where he is.

Dad,

You were the only father that I really knew. I enjoyed

the steelheading on the Cedar River, the fishing trips to Lake Crescent, going to football and baseball games that you made part of my life. When any of us needed your help, you were there for us. I’ll truly miss you and love you very much.

Dear Cheryl and Family,

I feel truely blessed to have been able to get to know Archie. He always had a hug and a smile for me and all who knew him and of course, also a joke….even though he was going thru his own stuff he still made time to come see me on dialysis. I hope you all know how much I enjoyed that and appreciated him. He will truely be missed. Helen from the coffee shop passes along her thoughts and prayers, also. May God bless you all during this sad time. Hello to Max!

Archie lived behind me. He was the first neighbor I met when I moved to Des Moines. I bought a couple of lawn mowers from him. I miss seeing him and his wife out in the back yard.

I remember his big hugs which he sqeezed out of you before leaving his place; so strong they were. Eating lunch and having coffee with him and my Dad the last year or two on occassion was was a great time. He knew people wherever he went and was always eager to listen. I am so glad you had the opportunity to know about my engagement, and how glad you were for the two of us. You will be missed by us both. I love you Grandpa!

Archie,

You could always be counted on for a warm greeting and a bear hug. You made friends everywhere and in your hands a large world became a circle of friends. You could do so much with just a cup of coffee, a smile, and a laugh. With genuine heartiness you would ask, “How are you doing?”

You will be missed!

Love,

Linda.

We,ve known Archie for about 15 years now. My dad was a driver for UPS and would eat lunch at the XL Sooper. That’s when we met Archie, and the rest of the twelve O’clock lunch bunch. I would come to the store to meet my dad, and there he’d be squashed in the middle of Archie, Chuck, Merle and who ever else came for the daily pow-wow. Archie always made sure there was enough room at his table for everyone, and that’s why everyone always had room at their table for him. I remember the day Archie stopped by to introduce us to the newest member of his family, Max. Archie was on his way home from his daily routine, visiting friends, coffee with the boys, and of course trying to pinch every pretty girl in town. He and Max came in for a visit and a few doggy treats. Well those doggy treats must have been something else, because about two weeks later I was looking out the window and saw this dog running towards our house just as fast as he could. Sure enough it was Maxmind you he’d only been to our house one time, by car, from the opposite direction he jumped the fence, came though the sliding door and patiently waited for a treat. Archie got a kick out of it, when we called to let him know I’d be walking Max back home. I will never forget Archie’s big smile, big heart and endless stories that I enjoyed so much. My thoghts and prayers are with your family.

Love

As a school-age kid in the 60’s I remember Archie and his big smile, warm heart and happy disposition as our family’s shared the property line between our two residences. Lots of memories of our backgate neighbors–especially Archie’s Southern Hospitality. To him family and friends were important and it showed in many ways. Archie, you made a difference while you were here and I feel blessed to have known you. Love, Sharon Quesnell

Grandpa,

I will miss you. Though I no longer play baseball I will never forget how you were always there. Some of the girls didn’t get support from their parents but they always new you would be there. I remember how you came all of the way to Tifton, GA to watch me play in the National tournament. What a great time. I will miss you and think of you often. Especially when I am enjoying a cup of coffee!

I love you, your first grandaughter,

Gretchen

My sympathies to the Hayden family regarding the death of your father. Cheryl & I met in 2nd grade and played at each other’s house often! Your parents always made me feel like part of the family. I still remember him sitting in his chair by the front door! He took Cheryl and I to a baseball game at least once at the old Six Stadium ?! Treasure your memories!
