Horst Dieter Bolden affectionately known to his brothers and sisters as “Hosty” was born Sept 28, 1956 to Arthur and Waltraud (Trudy) Bolden in Breman, Germany and was the oldest of seven children.
Horst grew up in the Compton, California where he attended elementary and middle school. He attended Garfield High School in Seattle, WA and Compton High School in Compton, CA but left to enlist in the Army before graduating, serving for 3 years before receiving an honorable discharge.
Hosty worked at The Boeing Company in 1977 and later attended Renton Vocation Institute in Renton, WA, studying culinary arts.
Horst loved sports especially Baseball. He kept a running record of scores for all the professional teams. While at GarfieldHigh School in 1973, he managed the basketball team. Horst also loved to watch his nephews play football and would regularly attend their games.
May 24th, 2009 Horst was baptized at Church By the Side of the Road and accepted Christ as his personal savior and was excited about having a relationship with God, reaching out to the late Pastor Charles Bereal to better understand the gospel and what it meant for his life.
He is survived by his mother Waltraud, 3 sisters Diana Bereal (Michael), Patricia Mitchell (Robert) and Ursula Smith, 1 brother Patrick Bolden and host of nieces, nephews, friends and family who he loved dearly.
Dad Arthur, sister Delores and brother Eric precede him in death.

Throughout our 2-1/2 years as neighbors, I’ve grown accustomed to HB’s familiar presence as he’d often sit across the lot with his door open. It feels strange and unfamiliar to walk outside each day and not see HB there, to not greet him with a mutual nod of the head, to not hear him call out to my dog, Scrappy, with the tone of voice that clearly identifies an animal lover. Given HB’s larger than life personality, the hole here in our Pacific Village community will likely be felt for quite a while.
My heart hurts for the family having to experience this unexpected loss. After reading the previous posts, I can see that he was the good man I was convinced he had to be. You see I’ve met his mother! Much love for the entire family and his grieving friends
My prayers to the family in this stricken time. I pray for your healing and comfort in the coming days. My hugs to all of you
R.I.P.
To my grandma, my mother, my uncle and aunts…. I am so sorry for the loss of my uncle Horst. I was fortunate to see him as an adult while living in Seattle and I’ll always remember his smile and the fact that he seemed so happy to see me. I am comforted knowing that my uncle believed in God and I know that I’ll see him again one day. I love you all. May God give you all peace and strength during this difficult time.
I will miss you the most. Our weekly grocery shopping trips and arguments over football, and most of all the baseball tips. U were like my family. Always baking the kids cakes and cookies, and pies. Giving my kids their first mits. My heart has a huge hole, and you will never be forgotten. Our last conversation you said you got me a Seahawks hat, and anyone who knows your love for the 49ers, which was a big deal. I love you and miss you always. Wish we could have had another 11 years. Rest In Peace.
WELL BIG O’G HOMIE TOMORROW IS THE DAY WE ALL SAY GOODBYE, I AM NOT READY TOO DO THAT CAUSE THE GREAT FRIENDSHIP WE HAD AND THE FUN WE HAD. BUMPING MUSIC SMOKING CIGRETTES TALKING ABOUT ALOT OF STUFF PLUS YOUR BOMB COOKING AIN’T NO ONE CAN MISS WIT IT BUT THE MOST ALL BE ABLE TO KICK IT WITH YOU AND YOUR GIRL THAT MEANT MOST TO ME. YOUWILL TRUELY BE MISS AND THOUGHT ABOUT, SEE YOU IN PARADES R.I.P HB YOYR LIL HOMIE LIL SCRAPPY
Though a little ornery at times, he was one who truly appreciated the community (Pac Vill) which he lived in. It would be nothing unusual for him to be BBQ and cooking for all his neighbors.
And yes, he was/is truly saved. I so remember him telling me of his baptism; Jesus Christ was and is his Savior.
Look down smiling HB. I’m missing you. Now who am I going to argue with about football……
Family,
In this time of bereavement we remember all the good times we shared together with Uncle “HB.” Though I barely knew him, the few moments we shared were priceless as we sat and talked on the front porch of the Mitchell residence this past February. He served his country honorably in the Army and continued his service in the Army of the Lord upon his Salvation. He will continue to live on in our hearts and minds. Until we meet again on the other side, I salute you for your dedication and honorable service to our family, community and a grateful Nation.
