Igmedio ‘Medie’ Calonge

It is a daunting task to determine how to sum up someone’s life and accomplishments into words on a page; a summary story of someone’s existence; someone who is important and significant to so many; written words that could comfort a family distraught by his loss and symbolize his impact and legacy here on earth. We all have different views, relationships, perspectives, and individual experiences that have shaped our perception and reality of Igmedio Calonge. You can say he was a loving family man with a great sense of humor, a hard worker, but I think we can agree that Medie makes us think of BBQs and sunshine. And if you really ponder this for just a moment, you can see how BBQs and sunshine are really part of who he is and his effect on others.

BBQs and sunshine are synonymous with family, friends, laughter, the outdoors, food and fun – all important pieces of his life that bring our individual connections together to celebrate it. He was a husband, son, father, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend. He possessed a sense of humor anyone who spent time with him could appreciate and enjoyed being outdoors whether it was throwing parties and BBQs with family and friends or keeping up the garden. He was a very giving individual who always made sure everyone was happy, content, satisfied, and having a good time. You could always find him laughing, joking, or teasing someone. Memories of Igmedio ‘Medie’ will comfort those who were privileged to know him in the BBQs and sunshine to come.

Igmedio Calonge slipped away to heaven surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, July 31st, 2011 at Highline Medical Center. Born in Makati City, Philippines on January 26th, 1959 to Leonora and Teofilo Calonge, his life’s journey took him from the Philippines where he spent his first 19 years. In 1978, he came to Seattle and took his first job in Alaska where he met many of his closest friends. In 1980 he met Tessie, his beautiful wife, whom he adored. He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Tessie, two children, Leah and Michael, brothers June and Frankie, father Teofilo, sisters Gloria and Lorna and many others.
