Beloved Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, Auntie and
Friend
The memory of a good person is a blessing. Proverbs 10:7
Ina Myers passed away peacefully on January 28, 2017,
surrounded by loving family.
Born in Prosser WA to Harry and Sarah Pierce, Mom was the
second of six children, with brothers Robert, Louis and John
and sisters Sarah and Mary Lou.
Growing up on a farm, especially during the Depression,
Mom said there might not have been much money but there was
always food. She enjoyed hunting with her brothers,
although she confided she always shot ahead or behind the
quarry and let her brothers do the actual hunting. She had
great stories of the pets they had, a piglet, a gosling that
they kept warm in a sock and the horse they rode to school
which would then go home on its own.
Mom also enjoyed school and was always the top of her
class. After graduation from high school in Prosser she
attended the University of Washington, enrolled in the
Nursing program. In her last year however she was called
home to Prosser to help care for her ill father and wasn’t able to complete her degree.
While working in Sunnyside WA, Mom met Ron Myers. They were
married and moved to Seattle to start their family.
Initially they lived in the University District, where two
daughters, Sarah and Nicki, and a son, Dennis, were born.
The family moved to West Seattle in 1953 and 2 more brothers soon
followed – , Patrick and Mark. Mom became active in
PTA, Scouting and other volunteer work. Family and friends
were always welcome in our house, many considered it their
second home and Mom their “other mother”. Mom encouraged
our interests, and the house was also full of pets and
books. Mom was a voracious reader who passed along her
love of reading. With 5 kids to read to, she knew nearly every Dr.
Seuss and Curious George book by heart.
As the family grew up, Mom joined the work force, first as a
teacher’s aide and tutor. Then she joined Safeco Insurance
as a Medical Claims Examiner, where her medical training was
put to good use.
Mom loved to travel. She travelled to Asia, United
Kingdom, Mexico (where she tried parasailing off the beach),
New York, Bermuda, Washington DC, Las Vegas, and a memorable
trip to Disneyland with grandchildren. After retiring from
Safeco in 1989 she took a month long trip with Elder Hostel
to Australia and New Zealand. Although she enjoyed all her
trips, Hong Kong especially stood out in her memory as she
liked to tell about ordering an “American breakfast” which
arrived as a slice of Spam, an egg and white rice. For
Mom travelling was about meeting people. No one was a
stranger, she approached all with an open and friendly
attitude and met with the same in return.
Mom volunteered for several years at the Discovery Shop in
West Seattle where she enjoyed working with
customers. She was an active member of Tibbetts
Methodist Church as well.
After a stroke in 2013 Mom moved to Judson Park Retirement
Center, where she continued to make friends among the
residents and staff.
Mom will be most remembered for her love of family, her
warmth and interest in others, and her adventurous nature.
Ina was preceded in death by daughter Sarah Clowes, and is
survived by daughter Nicki, sons Dennis (Deborah), Patrick,
and Mark (Barbara), as well as 10 grandchildren and 21 great
grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and many extended family and friends.
Mom, your memory will always be in our hearts.
I have so many fond memories with you. You were the best grandma to each of us and you never judged. Your advice was the best and always loving. You were so funny and I will miss you everyday until I see you again. I love you Gram
