Obituary
Jacques B. Chappell was born on August 17,1919 in Seattle, WA.
He passed away peacefully of natural causes on February 7, 2018 at his Merrill Gardens First Hill residence in Seattle, WA.
He was preceded in death by his wife Lillian L. Chappell, granddaughter Jennifer Denise and daughter-in-law Shirley Chappell.
He is survived by sister Joan Eberhart, Brunswick, Ga., sons and daughters Jacques Jr. (Victoria), Paul, Eric (Tammi) Suzanne, Victoria and Blaise. Nephews Doug Eberhart, Harold Eberhart Brunswick, Ga., Larry Eberhart, Marietta Ga., and Ronald Eberhart, Oakland Ca., and numerous grand, great-grand and great, great grandchildren.
He attended Lawton Elementary School, Broadway and Queen Anne High Schools and graduated from Queen Anne on June 5th, 1938.
He enlisted in the US Army on September 19,1942 and was honorably discharged on October 25, 1945 with the rank of Staff Sargent 34th Chemical Company
After returning from his military service he attended the University of Washington on the GI bill and graduated with a degree in Business Management. Jacques was one of the founding members of the Kappa Alpha Psi and their first Polemarch(president) of the fraternity.
After graduating from the University, he went to work for the US Postal Service as a letter carrier from 1950-1987. In approximately 1965 Jacques took a second job with as a custodian for New England Fish for 20 years to fund his children’s catholic school education. After retiring from the Post Office and New England Fish Co. Jacques volunteered at St. Therese as an assistant teaching reading to second graders.
In retirement Jacques and his wife enjoyed spending time with their large extended family. They had numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren that were involved heavily in sports and other activities. They were always the center of attention at family functions and Jacques was always willing to share his wisdom and advice and stories. He had a funny sense of humor and always had a “cat joke” ready to tell. Jacques always enjoyed a glass of red wine with dinner and Cadbury Roasted Almond Chocolate Bars.
In the last 2 ½ years of his life he lived comfortably at Merrill Gardens First Hill.

My fondest memory of uncle Jacques is he taught me how to swim when I was eleven years old. While I and my family were visiting from San Francisco we’d go to Lake Washington and during that summer he would patiently help me with my swimming. Before we went back to San Francisco I was swimming like a champ. Thank you Uncle Jacques Rest in Peace.

I am the sister of the late Werner Gaerisch, who was a good friend of Jacques. We lived a few blocks from him. I still have a couple pictures of Jacques and Werner, in their uniforms, standing in front of our home. My sister was a friend of his one sister, and myself remembering Joanne (that’s what we called her, so must be Joan). She was a couple grades ahead of me and took me under her wing when I went to Lawton. I really looked up to her and remember she had a good singing voice!
I talked to someone in the family, on the phone, when I read that his wife passed away. And didn’t hear anymore.
I remember Jacques as a good person and a good friend of our family. My brother and him graduated the same year.

what a wonderful man. i knew him and his fam at St T’s in Seattle CD. he was one of my first coaches in baseball. always, always kind.
