I still remember the bright, smiling young man that I was assigned to take care of that evening @UO hospital. I was a student nurse working evenings for experience and met Jeff that evening as he was being admitted for a Kidney tranpplant the next day. He stood out in my mind because he was so young and I was had never seen someone who looked so healthy face something so serious. I remember my concern for him and the ensuing days when I rotated to the floor he was on post surgery as he was recovering from complications.
Time went on and I graduated from nursing school and never knew if he had recovered from his transplant enough to get well and continue on with his life.Maybe it was from that brief interaction that I was drawn to dialysis. Little did I know that a number of years later I would be starting work @ NKC and my instructor was Mary Kurtz.
I remember being so glad to hear that the young man had recovered and was healthy and had met and married Mary. Over the years I would run into Mary and we would talk briefly, always glad to see that Jeff was doing well.
I just happened to read the obiturary section of Friday’s paper to see the notice and my heart was sad. However, I am so glad to know he was surrounded by a loving, caring family. I just wish I could have told him that his courage as he faced the first transplant so many years ago was part of the inspiration for my career in dialysis.
Hello Mary and family,
I am saddened to hear of Jeff’s death, but happy to read of the many things he enjoyed and the many years of marriage. My parents went to the same church and are long time friends of Marv and June’s. Marv and June welcomed us into their home many times. My brother loved going there as there were many boy things to do. I have wonderful Kurtz memories of weddings and get-togethers, and happy Jeff smiles.
I will always remember Jeff. He was a wonderful person and loved by so many. You are in our prayers. We love you!

Jeff was one of my favorites at Mark Morris HS because of his kindness and thoughtfullness. Since then, the few times I saw him, I found him to be incredibly upbeat and happy–just like the photo in this listing–despite his health problems. So many people are devastated by chronic illness; it’s inspiring to have known somebody who didn’t let it get him down. Rich Kirkpatrick, Longview

Jeff, Well we are now at the end of March Madness and I still have a hard time believing that you are no longer with us physically. I am very glad that we had some great times that I will always remember until we meet again. I still think of you often and miss our conversations. You were a good man and a great friend! Go DAWGS!!
Mary, Thank you for sharing Jeff with us and for caring for him throughout his courageous battle. We will all continue to miss his presence, but it is comforting to know that he is in a better place and that someday we will hear his voice and laugh again. My thoughts and prayers are still with you and I hope you are well. Stan
