Obituary

Joe Patterson Jr. was born in Valdosta, Georgia, on November 26, 1933, to the union of Pastor Joe & Gertrude Patterson, Sr. He was the second-oldest of six children of which four siblings preceded him in death. He departed this life during the early morning of August 3, 2004, at Providence Hospital, Seattle, Washington. He was 70 years old.

His parents affectionately gave him the nickname “Shug Baby,” which was later shortened by his family and friends to “Shug.” When asked, “Why do they call you Shug?” His reply was often in the form of a joke, “It’s because I’m so sweet.”

Joe attended South Street Elementary and Dasher High School in Valdosta, where he enjoyed playing sports. He attended Braswell Temple under the direction of Pastor James Braswell where he became an ordained deacon.

He married Audrey Braswell who preceded him in death on December 5, 1983. To this union, they were blessed with four children, two foster children and one godchild. During the early 1950s they decided to relocate their family with three young children at that time from Georgia to Seattle, Washington.

Joe and his family joined the Full Gospel Pentecostal Temple better known as: 16th & Fir, under the direction of the late Bishop C.E. Morris where they were active members. Joe loved to sing. He made a name for himself as a very talented gospel singer. Joe, along with Sis. Gladys Hardy, Bishop Drayton, Brother Glover, Brother James Collins and others, formed a gospel group called “The Welcome Travelers.” This group electrified congregations, tent meetings and revivals throughout the Northwest and the nation. One of Joe’s favorite songs was, “I’m Pressing On.”

Joe re-married on August 11, 1984 to Doris Reed. Together they enjoyed hosting gatherings where Joe often showcased his culinary skills. He loved to cook. He was best known for his delicious sweet potato pies, pound cakes and “Blackberry Dubely” his self named rendition of Blackberry Cobbler. His fun-filled personality not only warmed you with a smile, but his love for cooking satisfied your sweet tooth and appetite as well.

Joe was an original. He was a very stylish dresser. He took pride in his appearance and enjoyed others who did the same. His grandson Victor remembers saying to him one day: “Boy you sure are sharp today … . Your shoes are match’n your shirt and your shirt is match’n your hat…. That looks good!

Yeah, Joe Patterson was an original. It seems as if he always had a joke or encouraging words ready for his audience. His quick wit and funny sayings were his trademarks … “Ain’t no doubt bout it” was his latest saying… Can’t you hear him now?

Joe was employed with Metro Transit as a bus driver where he retired with over 20 years of service. He enjoyed his job and they enjoyed him.

Well, Ain’t no doubt bout it….”Shug” will be missed by all.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Gertrude and Joe Patterson, Sr., his brothers Sonny, Bill, and Jackie Patterson; and sister, Anita Patterson all of Valdosta, Georgia. Joe was also preceded in death by his foster son Deon Jones of Seattle.

He leaves to mourn his death, his loving wife, Doris Patterson of Seattle; two brothers, Eugene Patterson and Bobby Patterson, both of Valdosta, Georgia. He will be missed by his children: Curtis Sis Patterson, Geneva Patterson, Joe Patterson, III, Lisa Patterson and step-daughter, Anita Thornton, all of Seattle; their foster son, Michael Bradford of Oakland, California, and godson, Vernon Sims of Seattle; 17 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, relatives and a host of friends.

Doris and family, may God Bless during this time of loss. Joe was a funny, sweet and kind person. Doris was so blessed to have him as a part of her life, as well as the rest of the family. My prayers are with you all.
