John Sherwood “Jack” Powers

Born in Peoria, Illinois, on June 8th, 1925, the youngest of six children of sharecropper parents.  Died November 28th, 2014 at the Evergreen Senior Care Home, where he resided in the Green Lake District of Seattle. 

Jack was a World War II veteran who served in Normandy on D-Day.  He worked for the Navy after the war as a civil servant, raising his family on the island of Guam, in the San Francisco Bay Area and finally, in Washington state.  He adored his family, had a strong faith and volunteered for years, as long as he was physically able, in support of St Benedicts School in Wallingford. 

He is survived by his children who deeply love him: Michele and Russell Hirsch; Cheryl Powers; Kathleen Powers; and John and Sara Powers.   He leaves behind grandchildren who treasured him: Hanna, Mia and Ella Powers; Andrea Hirsch; and Aaron and Aimee Hirsch along with their sons, his great-grandsons, Preston and Bryce.  He will be mourned by each and every one of these souls and many other friends and relatives.  His beloved wife, Janie, his parents, all his siblings, and his great granddaughter Brianna Hirsch have preceded him in death.  His family celebrates the fact that he and his one true love and lifelong partner, Janie, are reunited. 

Funeral services at St. Benedict Catholic Church, 10am Thursday December the 4th 1805 N 49th , Seattle 98103.

John, I’m tremendously sorry to hear of the passing of your dad.

He was a great guy, who took the job of being a great father and awesome grandfather very seriously. He lived life surrounded by the people he loved, knowing that they loved him just as much. You cant really ask for more than that.
