At home, surrounded by his family, John M. Johnson died peacefully on July 3, 2009. He was born on the family farm outside Wessington, South Dakota. He spent most of his early adult life farming in South Dakota, then moved to Seattle in 1955. He owned and operated coin laundries in Ballard, coached youth baseball, and cooked church dinners, complete with homemade rolls and bread. His passion was his family, particularly his grandkids and greatgrandkids. Johnnie was preceded in death by his first wife Evelyn and his oldest grandchild, Eric Steiner. He is survived by his wife Annette, his daughter, LaVonne Arregui Ted, his son, Mark Johnson Karen, and his three grandchildren, Kari Van Houten Jon, Sarah Johnson, and Seth Johnson Callie, and his three great grandchildren, Kincade VanHouten, Javan and Josie Johnson. He is also survived by his older brother George Johnson Esther, his sister-in-law Naomi Calkins, plus many loving nieces, nephews, other extended family members and friends. A celebration of remembrance will be held on Friday, July 10, at 3 p.m. at First Free Methodist Church, 3200 3rd Avenue West. Also, a viewing is scheduled for Thursday, July 9, from 3 to 7 p.m. at Wiggens and Son in Ballard.
Mark, my sincere condolences on the passing of your dad. I remember his deep commitment to coaching and his love of family. May the Lord give you comfort during your time of grieving.
