I’ll always remember how kind and helpful Joy was to our family. She was counselor to all 4 of my daughters, at Stadium, and always had a kind word to share about them. She never missed a call back. The week before she passed away, she called me after 5pm, still at school, and determined to call everyone back who needed advice. And then the very day she died, I was walking the Relay to Life, raising money for cancer. How ironic life is. Joy, thank you, we’ll miss you, rest in peace.

Sincerely, The Tomazin Family

I always called her Joyetta or Miss Campbell and we always laughed so hard when we were together. God, we were funny together…Joy was a friend of mine for over 20 years and I will miss her so much, I can’t believe she is not here to finish all that she wanted to do and experience. I can’t believe that I won’t be able to share the warmth and humor of our friendship any more. Was it 26 years ago that we worked together at Edison Elementary School, and we laughed over something and there our wonderful connection began? I send this message to you my friend: I will miss you so much my friend, thank you for the laughter, the insight, the heart, the connection we always shared, you will always be a part of me…I know you are at peace now Joy, you were so courageous…My prayers are with your family during this time of transition…thank you Joyetta for being here, for being you…I love you Miss Joy…Wendy

I remember Joy as a vibrant, skilled, caring and counselor. As a past indirect supervisor of her work with children and youth, I always saw her as an outstanding person and counselor. I certainly made no mistake in recommending her for her positions in the Tacoma Public School. She was one of my favorite persons to visit with on the job. Even though I haven’t had recent contact with Joy I know she is going to be deeply missed. My thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends.

Joy,

I miss you. Your creative and sensitive comments, antedotes, and humor will be missed. Here’s a refrain from a yoga class we took together, “May the long time Sun shine upon you, All love surround you, And the pure light within you Guide your way on”. Your friend, Joe

To Joy’s family and friends,

I had the privledge of considering myself a friend of Joy’s. I have many pleasant memories of her which I will keep with me always. The strength I witnessed as she battled cancer taught me a great deal about myself. I will miss our talks and her thoughtful perspectives.

I have known Joy for over 15 years and I will miss her. She was a kind and gentle spirit with a smile that lit up the room. I enclose a poem that was sent to me when my mother died, I dedicate it to Joy and her family. My thoughts and prayers will be with you. I will be unable to attend the memorial service tomorrow but I will be with you in spirit…

We knew little that morning,

God was going to call your name.

In life we loved you dearly,

In death we do the same.

It broke our hearts to lose you,

You did not go alone.

For part of us went with you,

The day God called you home.

You left us beautiful memories,

Your love is still our guide.

And though we can’t see you,

You are always by our side.

The family chain is broken,

And nothing seems the same.

But as God calls us one by one,

The chain will link again.

I remember Joy being that bright young star that came to Meeker Jr. High fresh from a dancing stint from being in the FDR/Eleanor film where she was one of the dancers. Joy always reflected back to being able to be free and dance with ease….Throughout the years Joy danced with ease as she worked with students, parents and staff. Her joy was evident in her successes. May Joy rest in peace and know that she is remembered and loved.

I first met Joy the year I started working in the Tacoma School District as a Counselor. 1983 She had worked at Edison Elementary before I was hired. She had been the MDT Coordinator and knew a lot about Special Ed and all the paperwork and requirements so she helped me learn how to work with the staff on Special Ed issues. She had been an advocate for abused children there and we had many and she was often a resource for me. I viewed her as a Mentor.

Later we both worked as Middle School Counselors and then as High School Counselors. I knew I could always go to her for information and ideas.

We had the chance to stay at the UW together for a WEA Leadership Conference several years ago. I always enjoyed any time spent with Joy.

I was saddened by her illness because she did not have the energy to do all the things she wanted to continue to do. I was glad she made work a priority because our work is so important to students and staff. I am glad she continued to advocate for Counselors through the TEA.

I will really miss Joy. I can’t believe she is gone.

I, too, was a counselor with Tacoma Public Schools and remember Joy with great fondness, and then with great admiration as she began her long struggle with cancer. She was always courageous and lived her life fully and with spirit. The world was a better place for her warmth and compassion.

Joy, may you know how much you are loved as you dance with the angels.

Deep peace to Joy’s family, Paula

Joy has always been one of my favorite co-workers at Stadium. We have taken classes together over the years and her exquisite wit made every class memorable. The past few years have been hard for her put we all supported, loved and prayed for her…her greatest legacy to us was that she remained a grand and gracious lady throughout her ordeal. My deepest sympathies to her family. I will miss working with Joy and always remember her!!

Many happy memories of working with Joy for several years at Stadium High School. So sorry to hear of her passing. Neither of us can attend the memorial as Neil’s Uncle Fred passed away in Arizona and we will be on our way to his memorial on Saturday, May 21. We will think of her fondly and often.
