Obituary
Judith Louise Castagno “Judy, Cheeky, More Grandma” passed away peacefully on April 22, 2019 in Federal Way, Washington with her family by her side.
Judy was born at Virginia Mason Hospital in Seattle Washington on September 17, 1942 and grew up in Burien. She was in Girl Scouts, was part of the Opening of Ward’s Catalog Store in Burien and volunteered for the Women’s Division Chamber of Commerce ”Discover Seattle”. She graduated from Highline High School in June of 1960.
Judy married Dennis Castagno on February 16, 1963 in Burien. Dennis was drafted into the Army and stationed in Germany June 1963. Soon after that Judy would travel to Germany to join him. They returned to the states in 1965, renting a house until 1967 when they bought their 1st home in Burien. Judy was a homemaker and stay-at-home mom for their three children and many pets.
Judy attended Renton Vocational Technical College in 1975 and received a degree as a Data Entry Operator. She worked in the banking industry, was a cook, a floral designer and a successful business owner (Clean as a Whistle).
Judy treasured spending time with her family and friends. She loved (square) dancing, sewing, playing cards, bowling, golfing, camping, wearing colorful clothing, and hanging out at Mr. Ed’s and Little Pat’s. She was an excellent cook and especially loved to bake pies, fudge, bars, éclairs, cakes and cookies for her family and friends.
The real joy in Judy’s life came from her family. Her home was a regular gathering place for holidays, parties, and family events. Judy supported her family unconditionally. She had a heart of gold and selflessly cared for her family and friends. She always put the welfare of others first and would be there if a loved one needed anything.
Judy was known, and will always be remembered, for her uniquely contagious laugh and her passion for the color purple! The impact she has had on those who knew her is immeasurable and will continue to live on through the lives of those who love her still. She was an authentic, loving, humble and generous woman who will be missed beyond measure by her many friends and family.
Judy was preceded in death by her father Ronald “Pete” Petersen; mother Myrtle Petersen; brother Ronald Petersen.
Judy is survived by her children; Craig Castagno (Sherry), Tracie Castagno, and Ronald Castagno (Jacqueline); grandchildren Ronnie Jr. Castagno (Megan), Alyssa Vanderlin (Cody), Sierra Nixon (Cameron), Paige Castagno, and Rylee Castagno-Lieseke, as well Dennis Castagno and her sister-in-law Jimette Thayer.
Judy’s family would like to extend their gratitude to all the doctors, nurses and staff at St. Francis Hospital in Federal Way for their kindness in mom’s final days.
A service will be held at 12:00 pm on Saturday May 11th with a celebration of life to follow on site at Washington Memorial Park & Mortuary: 16445 International Blvd, SeaTac, WA. All are welcome and asked to wear purple or colorful clothing to honor her vibrant life on this earth.
To Judy’s family ,
We want to be among the many to send our deepest sympathy and to share a moment or two. Judy was my first friend when we moved to 160th and 15th SW in the 7th grade. She was obviously the same kind , fun loving person with that incredible laugh her whole life as mentioned in her lovingly written obit. While I went to Junior High with Judy both Ron and I went to Highline with her. We have lived out of state for 45 years so it was such a pleasure at one of our last two reunions to have a nice visit with her.
Want to send my deepest sympathy to the entire family in the loss of Judy. Growing up I so remember Judy’s outstanding contagious laugh. She was the life of any family gathering and a joy to be around. She will always be remembered by me for her favorite color purple. She will be dearly missed.
Such a great lady. Was our witness at our wedding 54 years ago. Will always remember your laugh and the color PURPLE.
Thanks for the memories.
To the Family of Judy, I want all of you to know how much she will be missed. Such good times. Our trip to Alaska and so many more. Always in my heart.
