JULIE ZIOCCHI, SP

Sister Julie Ziocchi, age 86, a Sister of Providence for 67 years, died January 20, 2016, at St. Joseph Residence, Seattle, WA. Vigil Service: Friday, January 29, 2016, at 7:00 PM, and Funeral Mass: Saturday, January 30, 2016, at 11:00 AM, both at St. Joseph Residence, 4800 37th Avenue SW, Seattle, WA. Burial at Calvary Cemetery, Seattle, WA, follows Mass and reception. Bonney-Watson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Julia Ziocchi was born August 5, 1929 to Frank Ziocchi and Louisa Catone, in Melrose Park, Illinois. She was the fifth youngest of 13 children from an Italian family. At age 8, when her mother died, she and her six youngest siblings were entrusted to the care of the Sisters of Providence at Maryville Academy in Des Plaines, Illinois. She entered the Sisters of Providence in November 1947 at Mount St. Vincent, Seattle, WA, then became a novice on May 18, 1948. On November 19, 1949, she professed first vows and received the name Sister Mary Hiltrude, and on November 19, 1952 she professed final vows.
In 1949 Sister Julie began her ministry as an elementary teacher at St. Joseph Academy in Yakima, WA. From 1951-1965 she taught in Washington at Holy Rosary School, Moxee; in California at St. Finbar School, Burbank; in Alaska at Immaculate Conception School, Fairbanks. Upon returning to St. Finbar she taught, then in 1965 she became Principal until 1969. While in Alaska, she also developed the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine (CCD) program at the military base in Fairbanks, and also in Anchorage, Homer and Seward.
Sr. Julie received a Bachelor of Arts degree in education from College of Great Falls, Montana; and graduated with a Master of Arts in religious studies in 1971 from Mundelein College, Chicago, Illinois. From 1971-76 she was an elementary consultant for the Archdiocese in Portland; then director of religious education at parishes in Corvallis and Albany, OR. Then she spent one year as coordinator of the Division of Religious Studies and Programs at Marylhurst College, Lake Oswego, OR.
From 1977-85 Sr. Julie held several positions at Providence Child Center’s Montessori and Emilie schools, Portland, as receptionist, secretary and assistant principal. In July 1986 she became Director of Pastoral Care at Providence Milwaukie Hospital, while also attending the Clinical Pastoral Education program at Emmanuel Hospital in Portland. Following a sabbatical renewal program on Spirituality of Aging, Atchison, Kansas, in 1994, she then retired in 1995 when she began her volunteer ministry. In 1996 she served as an educational consultant at St. Elisabeth Elementary School in Van Nuys, CA; and from 2001-05 she was a volunteer at Providence Child Care Center and served as a board member on the Providence Child Care Foundation. Also, in August 2010 Julie was the honored recipient of the “2010 Outstanding Community Inspiration Award” by the Providence Milwaukie Foundation.
In May 2011, Julie moved to St. Joseph Residence, Seattle, where she enjoyed listening to classical music/operas/ballets, doing puzzles, knitting, crocheting, all while being an avid sports fan and sharing cherished time with the sisters and her family and friends.
Sr. Julie is preceded in death by her parents and siblings. She is survived by her sisters, Carmen Mazzullo, McHenry, Illinois; Patricia Jankowski (Eugene), Hoffman Estates, Illinois; and Joann Reusch (Walter), Carpentersville, Illinois.

Sr. Julie was always a delight to work with. The Archdiocese of Portland was blessed to have her presence in many different capacities.
Julie’s smiling face and joy will continue to be with me.
Julie was a dear friend and a wonderful colleague to work with at the Providence Montessori School. She had a wonderful frog collection in her office and dressed up as Kermit the Frog for the Halloween Carnival. We did a lot of traveling together over the years and my favorite memories were eating ice cream at Lake Louise. Julie loved gardens and we visited as many as we could throughout Oregon, Washington and Canada. She was a part of our Brunch Bunch, the Blazer Bunch (Portland Trailblazers) and was a long time volunteer at the All Saints Episcopal Church Soup Kitchen with a lot of Providence Child Center retirees and employees helping. God bless you Julie and now you know why there are so many songs about rainbows and what’s on the other side….you are there now. Love, Mary
Julie, friend, your picture is so beautiful and you are in my
memories in bright colors and lovely smile. Two of my
memories are very distinct–I see you at Providence Center
in Portland–always with many children surrounding you.
The other memory is from Providence, Milwaukee—-I was
privileged to visit the patients with you. We were both in
pastoral care ministry–you brought love and cheer with you
wherever you went. You are in heaven now with many dear family members and friends. Love from Yvonne.

My daughter passed away on the same day as you, she was 19 yrs old. Perhaps the two of you met as you both passed through.
I did not know you well but your impact was moving when I was around you. I was on the board at Providence for a short time and I always loved your opening prayers. My daughter Kelton lived at Providence and I have the most wonderful photos of the two of you.. The photos are magical because I can see she was very alert and responsive to you, who can blame her. The two of you were grace, beauty and humility all rolled together. Any way, we laid Kelton to rest with the same outfit she wore the day the photos were taken. And I was happy to know that you might have been there to comfort her and show her the way……Thank you for being the best kind of example
