My Mom, JoHootenCalton has told me so many wonderful stories about her and Laurel growing up together and raising thier families and still remaining friends thru the years. We all enjoyed the times that Laurel and Les would visit us at the family property on Hoods Canal. While Les and my dad would be out fishing,Mom would ask Laurel to go black berry picking with her and usually scare her with bear “sightings” that only my mom could see. The one weekend I recall was when Mom took Laurel down to the beach and they were walking back to our cabin when mom called out she saw a snake. Well the oysters Laurel was caring flew up in the air and Laurel went running. Lois and I never seen our moms again until we got back to the cabin ourselves. Seems they both ran a different way back in fear of that snake… She’ll be in our hearts forever.
