Obituary
Lillian P. Schroeder, a long-time resident of the Des Moines/Normandy Park area, passed away on November 16, 2013 after a brief illness. She was 88 years old.
Lillian was born on August 28, 1925, to Wanda and Robert L. Phillips, in Baker, Oregon. Like many of her generation, the hardship of her depression-era childhood made a lifelong impression on her, and shaped her values, work ethic, and sense of priorities, which she passed on to her children. She was an expert seamstress, talented cook, and careful manager of the family finances. Family vacations often included summer trips to Eastern Washington to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables which were canned and served throughout the fall and winter months. She always looked attractive in the clothing she sewed for herself, and most of the curtains in her home and many offices in her church were the product of her handiwork.
After high school graduation, Lillian left small town life and followed her parents to Portland where the war effort offered greater job opportunities. She worked in the ship-building industry, and joined the US Department of Agriculture after the war. Through the Young Adultssingles ministry at First Presbyterian Church of Portland, she met Robert (Bob) Schroeder, an engineer from Milwaukie. They were married in 1954.
In 1957, Lillian and Bob moved to Seattle where he began a 30-year career with The Boeing Company. They settled in the Des Moines/Normandy Park area, where Lillian took great pride in designing their house and the surrounding landscaping. Involvement in their church (especially Lil’s sewing skills) was a key part of their life, and they developed many life-long friendships.
Lillian was preceded in death by Bob, her husband of 40 years. She is survived by her brother, Robert L. Phillips Jr., son, Phil Schroeder (Joan), daughter, Janice Dickens (Steve), and grandsons Kurt Schroeder, Daniel and Luke Dickens. The family is grateful to the staff of Judson Park Health Center, and for Lil’s friends who have provided supportand prayers during her illness.
A memorial service will be held at Lake Burien Presbyterian Church, 15003 14th Avenue SW, Burien, WA, on Saturday, December 7th, at 10:00 AM.
Remembrances in Lillian’s name can be made to the American Cancer Society.
