“Mac” Magruder
Levin Freeland “Mac” Magruder, Jr., died on December 9 in the memory care unit of Mirabella Retirement Community. He was 81. Mac was born in Alexandria, Louisiana, on June 11, 1931, to Dorothy Ann Alexander and Levin Freeland Magruder. He earned his medical degree at Louisiana State University, in Baton Rouge, then joined the United States Army in 1957 and completed residencies in psychiatry and neurology.
During his twenty years with the military, Mac worked all over the world. His stations included Letterman, in San Francisco (where he met and married Anne Cooper in 1960); Tripler, in Honolulu; and Second General, in Landstuhl, Germany. His last post was Madigan General, in Tacoma.
After retiring from the army, Mac practiced neurology in Ballard for 11 years, completed a fellowship in neuromuscular medicine at the University of Mississippi, and did several years of part-time consulting work.
He then devoted himself to travel, the study of French and the good life in Seattle.
He is survived by Anne, his son, Levin Freeland III (Jenifer); his daughter, Anne Elizabeth; and his grandson, Daniel. He also leaves behind his sisters, Alexandra, Pamella, Gwendolyn and Julia Abbey; and a brother, Lloyd.
