Obituary

Margie M. Command

Margie Mignon Command, 78, passed away on September 20, 2011 in Federal Way, Washington. She was born on May 17, 1933 in Seattle, the daughter of John and Margery Rouse.

She was raised in Yakima, Washington. After graduating from high school, she attended Yakima Community College, earned a BS degree from WSU, and earned a MEd from Central Washington University. When teaching junior high school she met another junior high teacher, Edward M. Command, and they were married on August 5, 1962. She taught nine years at the junior and high school levels before being selected as the women’s physical education and health teacher at Highline Community College in the fall of 1964. She retired from Highline in June, 2000.

She enjoyed teaching physical education and found even more pleasure teaching adult community college students. She was very strongly committed to developing athletic competition for girls and women and took great pride in being selected into the Community College Hall of Fame for her early work in creating and supporting athletic programs for community college women. She enjoyed outdoor activities including gardening, tennis, boating, fishing, and clamming.

After retirement many months were spent on the boat in the San Juan Islands and traveling to many places across the world. She spent a month in Australia and a month in New Zealand in 2001, visited Singapore, Japan, South Africa, and several trips to Great Britton and Western Europe. She cruised through the Panama Canal, around the Hawaiian Islands, to the capital cities of Scandinavia including St. Petersburg, in the Mediterranean, and from London to New York. Her favorite traveling place remained the Hawaiian Islands, and during retirement most winters were spent there.

Dear Dr. Command, I amso sorry to learn about Marge. My thoughts and prayers are with you. You two were such an amazing couple and a true example of a loving, caring partnership. I will never forget the times you gave me special projects when you were president of HCC, and the times you sat down with me to talk about my future and how to best handle things like my retirement. I cannot express how much your help meant to me. Love, Connie Johnson – conniej@u.washington.edu.

To Ed Command and Family members;

Ed, Margie was one of the first persons I met when joining “Highline College”, now Highline Community College in 1964, at the opening of the present campus. We both retired within a year of each other. I was saddened along with many of other retirees to learn Margie is no longer with us. I still see her image at the faculty meetings, walking on the campus and in her faculty office building.

Marge was a sunny figure in Faculty “C” and a delightful colleague. As a new faculty member, I appreciated her willingness to share her experience and perspective. In retirement, I was always glad to meet her and catch up on the news of her travels. I will miss her spirit and sweet nature.

I have many fond memories at Uncle Ed and Aunt Marge’s house for family gatherings when I was little. Aunt Marge was always smiling and ready with a hug for greeting. I’m so glad we’ve been able to get together for Thanksgiving and Mother’s Day these last years, and will cherish the memory of Aunt Marge playing with her Great Niece Ella this past May at our home. Love you and will miss you~

I am so sorry for your loss. May you find comfort in your loving memories, and in knowing that God is near to those that are broken at heart; and those who are crushed in spirit He saves. (Psalm 34:18) My deepest sympathy.

Ed, our sympathies and thoughts are with you. The jocks and computer geeks of Faculty C had some great times. Even the building is gone, now. But the memories never fade. We’ll miss Marge. Take care, Larry and Vickie.

It is with great sadness I heard of Marge’s death. She and Dr. Command were well respected at Highline and I for one remembered them as such a dear caring couple. It sounds like many, many memories were made in her lifetime. My thoughts go out to you at this very difficult time. Best, Jill Childs

Ed, while I am at a loss for words, I’m certainly not for memories – they are all wonderful of my times with Aunt Marge. Every moment I shared with her from a child to the Command gatherings to times at Highline CC to our time together in San Diego. I will truly miss her and think of her often. I’m so sorry for our loss, Ed. I love you!
