Martha was born on April 17, 1928 to Daniel M. and Marion C. Lancaster, in Seattle, Washington. She passed away on May 6, 2017, in Tacoma, WA. Marty graduated from Highline High School, earned a Bachelor’s degree from Washington State University and a Master’s degree from the University of Washington. After a few years as a Home Economics teacher, Marty served as a high school counselor at Mt. Rainier High School in Des Moines, WA until her retirement.
A treasured wife of William J. Kemp (deceased) and sister of Arthur Lancaster (deceased) Shirley (Kay) Lancaster, Marty is survived by her two sons, Bill and Jim, her daughter-in-law Cindy, her grandchildren Dan, Stacy, Jim, and Brian and several great-grandchildren.
Marty was a life-long learner, enjoying books and travel. She loved to travel with family and friends.
Marty believed in service above self, giving her time and energy to many different organizations throughout her life, including Eastern Star, Retired Teachers, AARP and various community groups. She had a tremendous ability to bring people together towards a common mission and provide leadership to create a positive outcome. She touched the lives of so many and always had a kind word to say. Condolences to the Kemp family. Our thoughts and prayers go out to your whole family. Psalms 147:3 says God, “heals the broken hearted, and binds up their wounds.” May God bring you comfort and peace.
Thank you Marty, for your many years of service to the women at Hospitality House. You were with us from the beginning. We will miss you and your generous spirit.
