On the evening of July 27, 2016 Mary Lucinda Carter passed away surrounded by family and caregivers at Genesis Adult Family Home in Edmonds, WA as a result of a long battle with Alzheimer’s. Mary Lucinda was 75 years old.
Mary Lucinda was born in Chattanooga, TN in her grandmother’s house on October 15, 1940. She was the second child of Doris Moore and William Johnson.
When Mary Lucinda was a young child she moved to East Liverpool, OH where her paternal grandmother lived. When she was 10 years old her family moved to Milwaukee, WI. She had what she described as a wonderful childhood that was surrounded by a loving family. As a child she enjoyed fishing, going to movies and plays and attending church.
On February 16, 1956 she married Henry Lee Carter who was her childhood love. They met when she was 11 years old and became friends. When they were dating they went for walks and spent time in parks. They attended dances, skating parties, and movies together. They dated for two years. All of Mary and Lee’s family and friends can attest to the intensity of their lifelong love.
Mary Lucinda’s first child was Jeffrey, born in 1956, followed later by Gregory, Dorita, and Leya. She loved her children dearly. She was a sweet and faithful mother. Her love was unconditional. She never gave up on any of us.
Mary Lucinda worked in the healthcare industry, was a stay at home mom and later owned her own daycare which she successfully ran for many years. Mary’s daycare was called Mary’s Quality Childcare Home and was located in the Greenlake area of Seattle. In 1989 Mary Lucinda won a Childcare Provider of the Year award. She loved working with young children and found great joy in doing so. She overcame many obstacles during her time as a business owner. There was an article written in the Seattle Times about some of the trials that she had as a Black small business owner, and how brave she was in trying to conquer these difficulties. Mary was excellent at her job and touched many children’s lives.
Mary Lucinda had a vibrant personality. She had a great sense of humor and enjoyed laughing. She loved to talk and she had a lot to say! When she was happy her joy was infectious. She loved music and dancing. Mary enjoyed reading poetry, watching science fiction movies and studying her Bible.
Mary Lucinda had an unwavering faith in our Lord. She loved Him with all of her heart. She trusted Him to carry her through her difficulties, and she lived her life in anticipation of her final reward.
There was something about Mary Lucinda that made her different from other people. Her beauty and charisma made her stand out in a crowd.
Mary Lucinda was preceded in death by her husband Henry Lee Carter, her son Jeffrey Carter, and her sister Olivia Veal. Her parents Doris Wright, William Johnson, and her Mother –in – Law Izzeler Pouge, and her stepfather Johnnie B. Wright went ahead of Lucinda to Glory.
Mary is survived by her children Gregory (married to Rebecca), Dorita, and Leya (Bill). She is survived by her grandchildren Latasha (Ray), Dymond, Jazmin (Nick), Danisha, Vidal, Vinson, Izzeler, Dominique and Amelia. She was a great grandmother to 5 more sweet children. She is also survived by her nieces and nephews Sherry, Tony, James, Doris, and Sabrina. She is survived by her sister – in – law Bertha, her brother – in – law John, her step-sister Sharon and her daughter- in – law’s mother Norma.
A Celebration of Life event will be held at Bonney Watson Funeral Home in Seattle on Tuesday August 2nd. Her funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday August 3rd at St. Mary Magdalen Parish in Everett, WA. Her body will be laid to rest at Holy Rood Catholic Cemetery in Seattle in a private ceremony where she will be reunited with her beloved husband Henry Lee Carter. Bonney Watson Funeral Home is handling all of the arrangements for the family.
Special thanks go to Genesis Adult Family Home in Edmonds, WA where Mary Lucinda spent her final years of life. They cared for her excellently, with great care as if she was their own Mother. Our family is eternally grateful to her caregivers.
Mary Lucinda was a beautiful and radiant soul. She will be sorely missed by her family and friends. Her family gives Glory and praise to our Lord Jesus Christ for taking our sweet Mary Lucinda into his loving arms for eternity.

I am so sorry for your loss. I remember meeting Lucinda when I was a little girl/teenager/young adult, when she would visit aunt Doris in Milwaukee. Aunt Doris would bring her over to our house. She was a spitting image of aunt Doris to me. Her smile and laugh especially! The photo above is excately how I remember her. I pray for comfort and strength for each and every one of you during this difficult time.
