Mary Marguerite Coberly
Mary, born February 22, 1921 and passed away peacefully on November 3, 2013 in her 50 year home in Normandy Park, WA. Mary was born and raised on a farm between the towns of Spivey and Zenda in Kingman County, Kansas to parents William Victor Wright and Mary Grace (Martindale) Wright. She moved to Wichita where she and husband Eldon lived until 1963 before moving to the Seattle area. She admired the kindness of her grandfather, Henry Thomas Martindale, so much that she declared her name to be changed to Tom. That combined with her tomboy interest on the farm resulted in her being called Tommy most of her life by family and close friends.
Mary and Eldon married on September 10, 1943 giving birth to two sons. She is preceded in death by Eldon her loving husband of 70 years, sister Peg Gillespie, and brother Bill Wright. Mary is survived by both sons and their spouses Kenneth (Linda) of Redmond, WA and Robert (Nina) of Taipei, Taiwan. Mary is also survived by grandchildren; Aaron (Brenda Lane), Karen Barker (Matt), Roxanne, Callie, and Kyle (Elyse). She has 4 great grandchildren; Caspian, Katie Barker, Megan Barker, and Duncan as well as three nephews; David Stutzman, James Gillespie, and William Gillespie.
Mary graduated from Wesley Hospital in Wichita, Kansas. She worked many years as a registered nurse and continued to provide care to people after leaving the workplace. Mary was small but very independent and strong willed with her strength being her devotion to family and friends. Her interests included a love of animals, sports, quilting, calligraphy, stamps, and coins. She kept and treasured every remembrance of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She never missed sending family and friends gifts and greeting cards for birthdays, anniversaries, and holidays.
There will be a grave side service in Cunningham, Kansas next spring beside extended family members that preceded her.
Dear Coberly Family,
I just saw your Mom’s Obituary and once again I extend Dad’s deepest condolences in your loss. I am so glad that she was able to see the pictures of my Father on the invitation I sent to her by way of you just a short time ago.
My deepest sympathy to you and your families. God Bless.
So sorry for your loss,Bob.
Words cannot express how special and loved my Grandma was, and how deep a loss is felt in her absence. She has and always will play a large roll in my life, and will occupy a large place in my heart. I will also miss her terribly.
Dear Coberly Family,
I was very sorry to hear of Mary’s passing. Mary was the nurse when all three of my children were born in Wichita many years ago. I had the pleasure of getting to know her more here in Seattle when I worked with her husband Eldon at Boeing. She was a very nice lady and will be missed.
Tommy was the most kind and loving person I ever had the pleasure of having in my life. I could not have special ordered a better grandmother for my kids. She and I remained friends to the end and for this I am beyond grateful. To say that I will miss her doesn’t even begin to cover how I feel. Sending my love and sympathy to all her loved ones – she was truly a special lady.
