Matthew Henry Kulawiec
July 23, 1924 - June 4, 2006
Obituary
Matthew passed away peacefully on the morning of June 4, 2006, at Mission Health Care in Bellevue. He put up a brave fight against various illnesses. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary, in 1986 and his second wife, Nancy, in 1998.
Matt was born on July 23, 1924 to Frank and Sophia Kulawiec.in Hamtramck, Michigan.
Matt attended the University of Detroit where he received a Master’s Degree in Meteorology.
On October 10, 1942, he joined the Army Air Corp where he earned the rank of first lieutenant.
After the service, Matt became a meteorologist with NOAA. Even after his retirement from NOAA, Matthew maintained an interest in meteorology. He always seemed to know just what to expect from the weather and loved to share that information.
Matt was an avid reader, taking on numerous subjects, always eager to discuss things that he had read. Learning and discussing was of great interest to Matt.
He was especially enthusiast about an appaloosa ride that he went on each summer with his wife Mary and her family. But, instead of riding an appaloosa on these rides as all the others did, Matthew walked. In preparation for these walks, Matthew would toughen up his feet by walking barefoot everywhere. He would often be seen walking around the neighborhood barefoot… even in the worst of weather.
Another event that Matthew always looked forward to was a trip taken each summer to Montana where time was spent on property that his first wife Mary and her family owned. Matt always enjoyed those trips. It seemed that they were always working on a fence. That must have been quite a fence.
Matt will be greatly missed by his friends…. we enjoyed your wisdom, your quick wit, your determination, and your wonderful sense of perspective. Thank you Matt. A special Celebration of Life honoring Matt will be held at a later date.
