Obituary

Former longtime Ketchikan resident, Maxine Robertson died September 18th, 2005 in Kent, Wash. from complications of Alzheimer’s disease.

She graduated from high school in 1925 in Auburn, Wash., attended the College of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Wash. and graduated with a teaching certificate from Bellingham Normal School, Bellingham, Wash.

She taught school in the state of Washington from 1928 to 1932. She then took a teaching job at Charcoal Point School in Ketchikan, Alaska, where she taught 2nd and 3rd grades. She taught in Hope, Alaska in 1933 and in 1934 in Hyder, Alaska. While in Hyder she met Al Robertson who was living in Premier, British Columbia. She went back to Ketchikan in 1935-1936 and taught at White Cliff Elementary.

She married A.D. “Al” Robertson in 1936 and they were married until his passing in 1975.

Together she and Al opened the first flower shop in Ketchikan called Al Robertson Florist from 1940 to 1942. She worked for the State of Alaska Employment Office from 1961 to 1982 part of the time as manager.

She cared about and gave much to her community of Ketchikan, serving on the Hospital Governing Board, Pioneer Home Advisory Board, and Community College Advisory Board. She was a member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, Order of Eastern Star and Garden Club and First United Methodist Church.

She loved to garden at her waterfront home, explore the beaches, and play duplicate bridge, travel, boat and fish. Her most treasured time was that spent with her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister and two brothers, and her late husband A.D. “Al” Robertson.

She is survived by two children: Ian and Nancy Robertson of Redmond, Wash. and Heather Robertson of Des Moines, Wash; and four grandchildren: Shawna and Mark Starr of South Salem, New York, Brian and Carol Robertson of Carnation, Wash., Shane Robertson and fiancée Shannon Wylie of Seattle, Wash., and Alana Clegg and fiancé Ewan Campbell of Des Moines, Wash. She is also survived by six great grandchildren: Kelsea, Taylor and Logan Starr and Hunter, Duncan and Alexis Robertson; and by numerous other relatives in the Seattle area.

Private family graveside services will be held at Bayview Cemetery on September 24, 2005.
