Obituary

Padlan before enlisting in the Philippine Army. His service brought him to Guam where he became an avid beach volleyball player. After his service in the Philippine Army, Mercurio moved to the United States where he worked in the fishing industry with his brothers. His work brought him to California and Alaska before he ultimately settled his family in the Seward Park neighborhood of Seattle. He spent his time watching, listening, and rooting for all of Seattle’s professional sports teams from their inaugural seasons. He split his retirement between his family in Seattle, Maryland, and the Philippines. Among many other things, Mercurio taught his grandchildren to crab and fish. If he wasn’t on the fishing docks, he was reading the daily newspaper religiously or could be found gardening.

 He is survived by his wife, Cornelia; four children Danilo (Levy) Umagat, Arnulfo (Myrna) Umagat, Jessie (Martha) Umagat, and daughter Rosalie (Louis) Laurencio; 11 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. Mercurio was preceded in death by his parents, Dorotea and Teodolo Umagat; five brothers, Aquilino, Celestino, Zacarias, Atanacio, and Raymundo; and sister, Ana.

 A funeral service for Mercurio Umagat will be held on Friday, August 17 at 10:15 a.m. at Washington Memorial Park, followed by a graveside ceremony.
