Obituary
CPO Milton Charles Dent Sr. was born July 22, 1922 in Baltimore Marilyn to Charles Dent and Sarah Stokes. The youngest of five children, Milton attended Douglas High School then served the U.S. Military from 1940 to 1967 in the United States Coast Guard, retiring with honors. He saw action during both World War II and the Korean War campaigns. He is a member of The American Legion. Milton and his late wife, Catherine, moved to Seattle with their six children in 1960 to reside in the Central District where he kept residence until his passing. Milton and Catherine were married 1949 in Cape May, New Jersey until her passing in 1995. Milton did not remarry, as he once said, “…so satisfied with Catherine I need nor want any other….after her”. He kept watch for 17 years beyond Mom’s passing in a remarkable state of health well into his 89th year. “Our dad was a shining beacon of vigor and solidity”. Milton walked as tall, straight, and upright as he did as a Coast Guard officer. No limp, or slouch…back straight. His vanity plate “MR DENT” could be seen around town and on daily drives around Lake Washington where he would greet the “young men” who would hang and socialize with him. He enjoyed their presence.
Soon after Catherine’s passing, dad went looking for the church in which he would study
Christianity and commit his spiritual services. He joined the Church of God Evangelistic Center in Seattle with Pastor Claudel Warren. There, he found a deep Christian revival that energized the golden years of his life and blessed the entire family. Dad was a powerfully devoted and humble Christian. He joined a traveling men’s Christian singing quartet that graced many congregations around the state. He attended bible study and prayer regularly up until he began losing steam in his last few months with us. Milton was a meticulous dresser. Spit-shined and well coordinated, always. His greatest passion was family gatherings. “IS EVERYBODY HAPPY IN THE COAST GUARD”!!! Used to be his “call sign” when family convened.
Milton departed this world in loving arms on Tuesday, February 21st at 8:20pm at Virginia Mason Hospital after a long fit life then short transition into the hands of the Lord. His earthly body came to the end of his last mission here on earth. There was no long illness or debilitation. His work was simply done. He was watched over by family and visiting friends during his entire hospital stay and cross-over.
Milton leaves behind a large and loving family tree. He is survived by six children; Theodore Huger (Eldest son from Catherine’s previous marriage), Millicent Blocquer, Milton Dent Jr., Lucille De Champs, Barbara Dent and Charles Dent.
