NAOMI HURD, SP

(Sister Naomi)

Sister Naomi Hurd, age 93, a Sister of Providence for 73 years, died January 15, 2016, at St. Joseph Residence, Seattle, WA.  Vigil Service:  Monday, January 25, 2016, at 7:00 PM, and Funeral Mass:  Tuesday, January 26, 2016, at 11:00 AM, both at St. Joseph Residence, 4800 37th Avenue SW, Seattle, WA.  Burial at Calvary Cemetery, Seattle, WA, follows Mass and reception.  Bonney-Watson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Naomi Hurd, the youngest of five children, was born August 14, 1922 to Nicholas Koetz and Mary Ann McLaughlin in Cle Elum, WA.  The family then moved to Toppenish and finally to Yakima where she attended St. Joseph Academy. 

On July 17, 1941 she entered the Sisters of Providence in Seattle, WA, and subsequently became a novice on January 18, 1942.  She professed first vows on July 19, 1943 when she received the name Sister Naomi.  On July 19, 1946 she professed final vows.

In 1943 Sister Naomi began her education ministry as a primary school teacher.  She taught at several Sister of Providence schools:  In Washington: Tacoma – Sacred Heart School, Seattle – Holy Family School; Yakima – St. Joseph Academy; Walla Walla – St. Vincent Academy; Olympia – St. Michael School; California: Burbank – St. Finbar School, and Maryville Academy, Des Plaines, IL.  She also taught at John F. Kennedy High School in Burien, a diocesan high school.  

Sr. Naomi received college degrees:  In 1952, a Bachelor of Arts in education, College of Great Falls, MT; from the University of Portland, OR, two Master of Arts, one in 1963 in Theology, and one in 1969 in Library Science. 

From 1973-1998 Sr. Naomi served as a librarian in Washington:  Desales High School, Walla Walla, and in California: Providence High School, Burbank.  She then became the Director of the Health Sciences Library at St. Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, CA, a position she held for 20 years. 

When she retired in April 1998 at St. Joseph Residence she enjoyed having time for reading, walking, exercising, and listening to classical music.   

Sr. Naomi is preceded in death by her parents and siblings and survived by her nieces.

Sr Naomi was my third grade teacher at St Finbar school in Burbank CA. Outstanding teacher.

I have fond memories of Sister Naomi Hurd. I worked with her at Saint Joseph Medical Center, Burbank, CA in the Medical Library from 1975-1981. We designed the new Medical Library which is still in use today.
