Nickolas Alexander Castas, 86, of Seattle, Washington, passed away on Saturday, December 23, 2017 at Providence Marionwood.
Funeral services and reception
will be held on Thursday, Jan. 4th
at 11:30 am at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, located at 2100 Boyer Ave E, Seattle, WA 98112. Burial will follow at Evergreen Washelli Cemetery at 11111 Aurora Ave N.
Nick was born in Seattle and lived there most of his life. At Lincoln High School he excelled at sports, deciding to turn down a basketball scholarship to play baseball in the Brooklyn Dodgers farm system. After flourishing in the triple A leagues, it looked liked the Majors were next up, but during spring training his leg locked, a career ending injury back in the 50’s. He would later also scout for the Pittsburgh Pirates. During this time, he met Patricia Jolene Early, the beautiful young woman who would become his wife of 52 years until her passing. Although she said the blooming baseball star was a little full of himself, she couldn’t resist his charm and positivity, and they would soon elope to Tennessee, where Nick had just been stationed at Fort Campbell after joining the military. According to Nick, since it was during peacetime all he did in the military was play baseball and basketball. When his service was over, it was back to Seattle.
Nick and Patty renewed there vows in the Greek Orthodox Church, where Nick would volunteer often and coach the basketball teams and Patty would teach Sunday school. He also coached baseball and basketball in his community for many years. Nick went on to have a long career in sales, where his congeniality and positive disposition helped him to be top salesman for the national company more than once. They had season tickets to the SuperSonics and the Mariners, which they both loved, and to the Seahawks, where Nick would root for his team and Patty would read a book. They lived a happy and fulfilling life together for 52 years till Patty’s passing. Nick never stopped talking about how much he missed her.
Nick is survived by his daughter Melanie, his son Alex, his four grandchildren, Cerissa, Jacob, Jesse and Vanessa, his sister Mary Touloumes and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Vasilia and Alex, his mother-in-law Wilma, and his soul mate and wife, Patricia.
