Ora Lee Weatherly

April 23, 1922 - July 9, 2003

Obituary

April 23, 1922. A warm spring day and the angels were busy making last minute preparations. Today was a special day for Willie Clayton Christmas and his lovely wife, Willie Victoria of Bladon Springs, Alabama. Expecting a special delivery and they weren’t disappointed as Ora Nee Vernice Irene made her arrival. She was the second of five children… all girls!

Ora received her education in and about Bladon as she traveled with her mother , Miss Willie, who was a schoolteacher. At an early age, Ora made her selection clear and accepted Christ as her personal Saviour.

Ora left Bladon Springs and moved to Mobile, Alabama. One evening, she was invited to a carnival by a young man who brought along his friend, Timothy. It was clear by the end of the evening that Ora and Timothy were taken with each other. Timothy, who was in the U. S. Army, was stationed at Fort Wayne, Indiana. He sent for Ora and they were married January 29, 1943. To this union three children were born.

After leaving the service, seeking a better life for his bride, Timothy came to Seattle in the mid 1940’s and sent for Ora. Ora worked at Troy Laundry and Carl’s Cleaners, leaving shortly after the birth of her last child.

Remembering her Christian duty, Ora joined the Goodwill MBC under the late Rev. Norman Mitchell. During her membership of over 50 years, she served as Church Secretary; secretary of the Willing Workers Bible Study Group over 32 years and whenever and wherever she was needed until her health prevented her from doing so.

Ora was an outstanding supporter of Timothy’s quartet singing. It was not unusual for her to open her home to singers. For years, when Timothy was a member of the Kansas City Gospel Singers, The Friendly Brothers and the Electrifying Mighty Warriors, they would rehearse in the Weatherly living room.

Ora graciously opened and welcomed others into her home. When Timothy would bring home a group unexpectedly after a program, Ora, an excellent cook, would go in the kitchen, stretch what she had and cheerfully share. When a dinner was planned by the Willing Workers, The Friendly Brothers, the Mighty Warriors or the Christmas Sisters, it was often held in the Weatherly home. Ora never complained.

As her children grew older and began to bring their friends to the house, it became more and more common for them to refer to her as Mom rather than Mrs. Weatherly.

In addition to her cooking skills, she was an outstanding seamstress, making 99% of everything that she wore!

Ora will long be remembered for her strong support of her family, her willingness to help those in need, her dedication to be a Christian example for her family, community and friends and her ability to bring peace out of chaos.

On July 9, 2003, the angels again busied themselves for the Lord called His precious Ora home. Ora leaves to cherish her memory and follow her example: her devoted husband of 60 years: Timothy: three children: Evangelist O. Diane Johnson of Los Angeles, CA; Timothy M. Weatherly and Denise W. Davis of Seattle, WA; two grandchildren: Deshawn Weatherly and Diamond Davis of Seattle, WA; three sisters: Mrs. Alice Wilson, Mrs. Charlie Mae Brown, and Mrs. Lettie Brown of Seattle, she was preceded in death by her sister; Willie Mae Fields Shine; a host of nephews, nieces, relatives and numerous friends.

To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord

Mama it’s been 5 years today that the Lord called you home. The hurt today is just as fresh as it was then. Knowing that you are in a much better place and that Daddy is with you eases the pain but doesn’t fill the emptiness.

I love and miss you.

your daughter,

Diane

Wow, where to begin. It has been 9 years today since you left us. It has not been easy not having my Mom here to talk to. So much has transpired that I want to share with you. You have a beautiful great grandson that you would just spoil rotten. He is such a joy. I really do miss you. Please continue to be my Guardian Angel & watch over us. Love you momma!
