Obituary

Paul C Newell

Nearly lifelong resident of Des Moines, Washington, Paul died January 12th from complications of immunotherapy at age 77.  He was a graduate of Highline High School, and the University of Washington with both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in Atmospheric Sciences.

He spent 6 years in the U.S. Air Force, serving in Viet Nam, briefing the Central Command on weather forecasts.  For his service he was awarded the Bronze Star and Air Force Commendation Medal, before leaving the Air Force as a Captain.

Following his military service, he worked for Continental Airlines, Western Airlines and Delta Airlines before leaving the industry to work for Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad.  Upon his retirement he worked for Princess Cruises as a passenger agent at the terminal in Seattle.  He also would transport crew members from their hotel in SeaTac to the cruise ship, and sometimes retrieve their luggage if it arrived late.

Paul was also a world traveler, having sailed on more than 100 cruises.  He made many friends on these cruises.  Here at home he made more friends with folks at Anthony’s Homeport Restaurant in Des Moines, both customers and staff.

Paul had no immediate family but we, his extended family, remember him for his kindness, dry wit and stories of his travels with which he regaled us at family gatherings.

Vigil will be celebrated Thursday, March 15th, 7:00 p.m., at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 15226 21st Ave. SW, Burien, with Mass of Resurrection Friday, March 16th, 11:00 a.m., also at St. Francis of Assisi Church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Francis of Assisi School, 15216 21st Ave. SW, Burien, WA 98166

I was taken by surprise and saddened by the news of Paul’s passing. He was a good friend and co-worker of mine at Burlington Northern Santa Fe. He will be missed.
