Obituary

Phyllis A. Wildermuth HAIGH

Born June 9, 1922 in her beloved city of Seattle, passed away on April 9, 2005. She was a 1940 graduate of Franklin High School and also attended the University of Washington. She met her husband of 56 years, Henry “Bill” Haigh, the day after her high school graduation. Nine years and one war later, they were married at Rainier Beach Presbyterian Church. Her husband and two daughters, Leslie Nuttman and Sandy Haigh and their husbands survive her. Phyllis also has two granddaughters, Katy Nuttman and Mattie Olson as well as two nieces and a nephew. She worked for twelve years at Boeing and then became a full-time homemaker and mother when her children were born. She will be remembered for her adventuresome spirit that took her on a nine-month bicycle and ski tour with her best friend to Scotland, England, Italy, Switzerland, and France in 1947. She was a twenty-seven year member of the Three Tree Point Yacht Club and sailed extensively in the Northwest and on trips to the Caribbean and to Maine, and she completed a raft trip down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon while in her 70’s. She enjoyed all outdoor activities including hiking, camping, skiing, and golfing. She liked to travel, was a member of a bowling league and loved her many pets. She was a group owner and builder of a log ski cabin near Stevens Pass and personally hand split the shakes and installed them for the roof. At her request, there will be no funeral services. I enjoyed playing golf with Phyllis. Our daughters grew up with Leslie & Sandy and thought of Phyllis as a second Mom. We miss her.

Phyllis was one of my other moms. The Haigh household was my second home during my childhood. My sister and I had the privelege of getting to ski, sail, and hike with Phyllis and to this day I can still hear her laughter as if she were in the same room.

We remember Phyllis as a dedicated Race Committee member when we acted as Committee Boat for 1 Duwamish Head Race and several Spring Regatta’s.

We will miss her at Three Tree Point Yacht Club.

I will always remember my aunt Phyllis taking care of me when I visited, in Normandy Park, as a child; as ‘The Chef’ in the galley when cruising/sailing; and as my aunt during recent Christmases spent in the Haigh household.

She was my motivation to travel with a sense of adventure, and I still remember her gift to me of a fabric “seniorita” doll dressed as if for Flamenco dancing.
