Prue Baldwin Surrounded by family at her home, Prudence Weigle Baldwin passed away on July 31, 2008, at age 72 after a dignified battle with lung cancer. Her generosity of spirit, keen intellect and sense of fun will be missed by all who knew her. Born in Seattle in 1936, to Bernadette and Alfred Weigle, Prue grew up in Madison Park, and attended Forest Ridge School. She graduated in 1956 from the University of Washington with a degree in Economics and was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. Prue’s greatest passions were her family and Children’s Hospital where she devoted 28 years of service as a committed and dedicated member of the Board of Trustees. She chaired every committee, including the Audit Committee which she founded. Prue served as chairman of Children’s Board of Trustees from 1990 to 1993 and was made an honorary trustee earlier this year. Prue hosted the pediatric residents’ retreat program for more than 20 years in her own home. She forged lifelong friendships with many of the young doctors and took great delight in following their successful medical careers. Before joining Children’s Prue had an active career in the volunteer sector working with Forest Ridge School, the Junior League of Seattle and the United Way of King County. Prue was a member of the Children’s Hospital Genevieve Henry Guild, established in 1958 with many dear friends who shared her value of the hospital. Prue was proud to be the first recipient in 1994 of the Mary Maxwell Gates Community Award given in recognition of ‘volunteerism at its best.’ Prue worked for many years as anarbitrator for the National Association of Security Dealers. Her strong sense of ethics, fairness and business acumen made her a valued member of the panels. She was a member of the SeattleTennis Club, the Sunset Club, where she served on the finance committee, and was a member and served on the Board of Directors at the Broadmoor Homeowners’ Association. Prue spent a lifetime of summers at Sandy Point on Whidbey Island and served as the President of the Homeowners’ Association and editor and publisher of the Sandy Point Scuttlebutt. She was a voracious, discerning reader, cataloging every book she read with an annotated bibliography and rating system. Prue was devoted to her family, always putting her children first.She gave generously of her time, unlimited talents and energy. She is survived by her three children, Jessica Baldwin and her husband, Maurice Hochschild of London and their children: Annabella, Jack and Luke Hochschild; Joe Baldwin, his wife, Anne of Seattle and their children; Michael, Emily and Max; Jack Baldwin, his wife, Katie of Seattle and their daughter Abby. They will miss her dearly. A funeral will be held at St. James’ Cathedral on Wednesday at 10:00a.m. A rosary will be held on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at Bonney Watson Funeral Home, 1732 Broadway, Seattle.Remembrances can be made to the Baldwin Family Advised Endowed Funds for the University of Washington Medical Center or Children’sHospital or to the Prudence Weigle Baldwin College Scholarship Fund for Forest Ridge School students.
