Obituary

A loving wife, mother, and friend, Rachel Heeringa went to be with her Saviour and Lord on December 13, 2016. Rachel was born on November 6, 1927 in Grafton Nebraska to Andrew and Elsa Ackermann. She grew up on the family farm with five sisters and two brothers and eventually made her way to Seattle Washington where she married Thomas Heeringa Jr. on August 31, 1963. She was a devoted mother to their two children; Sheila and Duane.

Rachel worked a number of jobs over the years, including as a cook at Boulevard Park Elementary school and eventually retired from Hancock Fabrics where she was a retail clerk. She enjoyed sewing and knitting and traveling around the United States.

Rachel was active in her church, John Knox Presbyterian – Normandy Park, where she served as a deacon, volunteered at Tape Ministries Northwest, and sang in the church choir. She loved her family and friends and especially cherished her two granddaughters, Olivia and Sadie (children of Duane and Amy Heeringa).

Rachel was preceded in death by her husband Tom; her sisters Lydia, Sarah, Luella, Elizabeth, and Esther; and her brother Gilbert.

She will be missed.

I have been incredibly blessed to have Grandma Rachel in my life. I am thankful for all the wonderful things we were able to do together. She showed me what it is like to love the Lord with your whole heart and mind. Saying goodbye is hard, but I praise God that she is in heaven, healthy and safe.

Missing you a little extra today Grandma.
