October 5, 1974 – November 27, 2022

Robert Johnson, age 48, passed away November 27, 2022, in his home in Federal Way, WA.

Robert was born October 5, 1974, in Bellingham, WA, to Susan Johnson. Despite living in multiple cities and states throughout his life, he always considered his home to be in Rancho Cordova, CA.

Robert graduated from multiple universities and obtained several degrees, but his passion was journalism, and he dedicated his life to writing. He wrote and edited for numerous newspapers throughout the country and loved covering sports stories above all others. As an editor, he most enjoyed mentoring young reporters.

Throughout his journey in this world he spread love, laughter, endless conversation and left his vast collection of family and friends with so many happy memories and shouts of “Hooray.” Robert taught everyone to live life to the fullest and make the most of every opportunity. He is so loved and will be deeply missed.

I married Robert in 2008. We shared 18 years together. Although we divorced in June this year, we were still friends and talked or texted everyday. He was an amazing writer and I will love him the rest of my life.

The only brother-in-law I had and it was like having a blood brother. No matter the length of time between visits and phone conversations it was like no time had passed. I hope he has found peace and is reunited with Tom and Janet Adams. He will be missed.

Growing up as a kid Me and Robert Bonded like brothers in 1988 at Rancho Cordova, All of us had a lot good times back then. Till about 1996 the family moved on as we grew up. Some of my best Childhood memories was chilling with Rob getting into mischief..First time I ever drank beer was a 32oz king Cobra with Oscar 1993. Their is a lot more to list, unforgettable memories. Rest in Power Big Bro.Can not believe he left us so soon, way to young to go 48.

I met Rob during my brief nine-month tenure with the Puget Sound Business Journal. He started shortly after I did. I thought he was smart, down-to-earth and really funny. An absolutely genuine man.

I think we quickly realized we shared an unspoken bond that we knew we weren’t going to be with the PSBJ very long. The morning The Seattle Times called to offer me a job — an acceptance to a rival publication that would end my position at the business journal immediately — Rob accompanied me as I left the building. I hardly knew this man, but here he was, standing with me on the sidewalk in downtown Seattle, watching me grin ear-to-ear and hop up and down, and sharing a moment I had been waiting to come for more than 20 years. He was sincerely happy for me, even letting out one those trademark “Hoorays!” He shook my hand, patted me on the back and said we’d keep in touch.

We hung out couple times after that and texted occasionally. Busy lives and the pandemic got in the way. He reached out on Thanksgiving, and he seemed like the same ol’ Rob. He once referred to us as kindred spirits. It’s hard to disagree. I really do wish I could have gotten to know him better, but I am grateful that I got to be his friend for a little while.

Rest in peace, Rob.

Rob and I met through DOC. It took only one email/re-write to see his incredible talent. It took only one Teams meeting to see his humor and genuine heart. We became friends instantly, though it wasn’t for near long enough. I have so many pics of his beautiful children, cause he was so incredibly proud. I have picture after picture of him in his Dodgers gear, as I am a die hard Yankee fan, so we battled, lol. I have detailed lists of books with all the notes and recommendations – I will be sure to read them all and remember him while I do so. I’ll complete the hikes we were supposed to do together. His wit, charm, humor and heart made this world a better place. My condolences to all who loved him, especially his children.
