A Tribute to Roger Mochnick

Roger was my supervisor, mentor and friend for the last seven years. He really made a difference in so many people’s lives in a number of different ways. His work for the EPA helped to preserve water quality to keep water fishable, swimable and drinkable. He was a pleasure to work with and was able to troubleshoot for staff members and just make the Region a more pleasant place to be. He rarely went around without a smile and good humor. He helped to bring a sense of camaraderie and could always be counted on to get the job done. He was a great pinch hitter at times and could handle any impromptu briefings. He helped a number of people grow in their careers here too.

One a more personal note, I reported to him directly when I first moved to Seattle from Chicago and he helped me to transition to the Regional culture and to living in the Northwest. He remained my supervisor as we both moved offices a few years ago. He was there as my husband and I got married, bought our house and had our first child and as he said “finally got some responsibility so we didn’t have time to play and race sailboats anymore.” He couldn’t understand why Vashon Island wasn’t on our list of places to buy a house. He always spoke so highly of Joe and Corin. I felt like I knew them from all of the times he would tell me about the latest wonderful things they were doing or what he was going to get them for Christmas. He also spoke of his father and step-mother and visits to Nevada and his sorrow when Rex passed away. He always boasted about the Huskies and how we should get to more of the games. His advice has been invaluable and his good spirit will always be missed!

I will truly miss the times Roger, my brother Jerry, and myself had commuting on the ferry to work and laughing about numerous things until our eyes watered. Roger had a great sense of humor and he was a wonderful friend, who I will greatly miss seeing on the 7:20am ferry commute to Seattle. I will look at the seat that he always sat at on the ferry and cherish the memories of our jokes and talks about lifes experiences. Goodbye Roger.
