ROSARIO BENIDA DAUGHERTY LANDON

Rosario was born August 6, 1909 in Guimaras, Iloilo, Philippines to George Daugherty and Juana Benida. Rosario passed away January 6, 2011 in Seattle, Washington at the age of 101 years old. Her nickname that she was best known by was Chayong.

Rosario’s father, George Daugherty, and Rosario’s future husband, George Landon, served together in the Cavalry during World War I in the Philippines. Rosario’s father had to return to America due to a medical condition. His son Alfred was to accompany him. Rosario, age 16, her beloved sister Virginia, age 6, and their mother Juana had to be left behind. Rosario’s father decided she should marry George Landon before his departure. George Landon was a very willing participant. On May 1, 1926 they were married in Angeles, Pampanga, in the Philippines. Rosario and George had six children, Irene, Alice, George Jr., Pearl, Frederick, and Jose.

Rosario’s husband George was killed in a truck accident while on duty in Fort Stotsenburg, Philippines on September 3, 1936. She was widowed at 27 years old. Rosario devoted the rest of her life to raising her children with the help of her mother Juana and her sister Virginia. Together they all survived World War II with the help of her sister Virginia and her husband Ruben Macapinlac. Throughout the 1950’s Rosario and all of her children were able to move to America one by one. The family settled into homes very near each other on Beacon Hill in Seattle.

Rosario lived a very full life in America. She babysat the grandchildren and cooked their favorite foods for them every day. She had a love of travel and visited many of the states including Hawaii and Alaska. She visited the Caribbean and went back to the Philippines many times. She also loved her Mariners and Sonics and read the sports section daily. She loved to discuss the Mariners with her grandsons.

Rosario’s hobbies included bingo, mah jong, and the casino. When Rosario couldn’t get around much anymore her grandson Michael taught her to play solitaire on the computer.

Rosario showed tremendous strength and perseverance in her life. She liked to tease and had a great sense of humor. Rosario will be remembered for her great personality. She was warm and friendly and a very caring person.

She was fortunate to have good health beyond her 95th birthday. Her last trip was to Arizona when she was 97 years old. She stayed for 3 months. Everybody loved her and she made many new friends including a couple of bikers from Texas.

Rosario is survived by her children: Alice Marcelo Borromeo, George Lita Landon, Pearl Landon and friend Myra Greenberg, and Frederick Shirley Landon. She also leaves behind 19 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, 7 great-great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and many friends. She was preceded in death by her husband George Grant Landon, daughter, Irene, son Jose, brother, Alfred Daugherty, sisters, Lourdes Daugherty, and Virginia Macapinlac.
Graveside Services will be held for Rosario on Saturday, January 15, 2011 at 1:00pm at Bonney-Watson Washington Memorial, 16445 International Blvd, SeaTac, WA 98188.

Auntie,

Your life touched everyone: family, friends, neighbors, strangers, rich or poor alike, learned or not….that’s the kind of magnitism you drew to all the

people around you. It is not easy and simple to be loved and adored, but with you, you simply opened your lips to smile, twinkled your eyes with warmth, and extended your arms to welcome all…..that was who you were and how you made others lives as wonderful as yours! You simply were the best at all facets and your brilliance never faded till the end.

We will miss you and our devotion to you as with the legacies you left us will remain forever to hold. Safe journey to you and carry with you our prayers and peace. God Bless, my favorite Auntie.

With love always,

Marlo

Auntie,

Thank you for the care and love that you gave us all these years. You and Babe took care of us when we first arrived in the U.S. You woke up early to make hearty breakfasts and “baon” for everyone working that day. Your dedication and hard work for your family is an inspiration to all of us. We all remember your smilng face… sense of humor and energy that always light up the room. It was always fun when you were around. Sorry we could not be there, but you are in our thoughts and prayers. May you rest in eternal peace.
