Russell M. Carlson
Age 93, died peacefully on Oct. 29, 2008. Born Sept. 14, 1915, Minneapolis, Minnesota. He grew up in Minneapolis and graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1936 with a master’s degree in Aeronautical Engineering. After college, Russ worked for the Boeing Company in Wichita, Kansas, for one year. He then moved on to work for Chance Vought in Stratford, Connecticut, where during WWII he managed a structures group supporting the construction of Corsair fighters. Russ continued working for Chance Vought until 1949 when he took the opportunity to return to the Boeing Company in Seattle. From there he enjoyed a thirty-year Boeing career as an engineer manager until his retirement in 1979. He continued to be a member of the Boeing Management Association through his retirement years. He was also a member of the Des Moines Methodist Church and was previously a member of the First Methodist Church of Seattle. Russ and his wife, Rosemary, met as teenagers in Minneapolis and they later fell in love and were married there in 1942. They were married for 66 years. Since 1953 he and Rosemary have lived in the house Russ built in Normandy Park where they raised their three sons and one daughter. Before and during retirement, he enjoyed playing golf and bridge as a member of the Glenacres Golf and Country Club in south Seattle for over 30 years. Every winter Russ and Rosemary also enjoyed extended winter visits to their daughter Lucy’s residence in Honolulu, Hawaii. Russ is survived by his loving wife Rosemary, sons Bob Holly, Bill Sheila, Alan, and daughter Lucy; grandchildren Sara Carlson and Laura Porcincula Shawn; and two great-grandchildren. Russ loved his family and enjoyed their many family get togethers throughout the years. He was a quiet man with a gentle manner and a wonderful sense of humor.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, November. 21, 2008, at 3:00 p.m. at the First Evangelical Presbyterian Church, 19800 108th Ave. S.E., Renton, Washington. Interment was held at Bonney-Watson Washington Memorial Park on November 4. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Highline Home Health and Hospice, 2801 S. 128th, Tukwila, WA, 98168.
