RUTH MARIANNE HAMILTON COSTELLO died peacefully on February 1, 2008 at Stafford Healthcare; Des Moines, W A. Marianne was born on October 31, 1923 in Baltimore, MD. The beloved daughter of John H. and Marie G. Edge, she grew up in the District of Columbia, living in both Anacostia and the Northwest part of the city. She attended McKinley High School and George Washington University, where she received her BA degree in Sociology, was a member of the Glee Club and Kappa Delta Sorority; and met her future husband, fellow student and District native, Eugene A. Costello. As a young woman in Washington, DC, she worked for Woodward and Lothrop Department Store, the Library of Congress, and the National Weather Bureau. Following her 1949 marriage at St. Anne’s Episcopal Church in Annapolis, MD, she accompanied her husband to Washington State, where he was stationed at the Whidbey Island Naval Air Station during the Korean War. Following the war, Marianne and Eugene made their home in the Seattle area. While raising three children, Marianne involved herself with church activities, PTA, Cub Scouts, Campfire Girls, Community Schools, and AAUW. She went back to school when her children were grown, obtained certification as a recreation specialist, and went to work as an Activity Director in several area nursing homes. Her deep-rooted and enduring love of music, drama, and arts and crafts could be soundly seen throughout her family life and in all of her volunteer and paid work in the community. In retirement, Marianne continued with her lifelong hobbies and developed new and special interests in weaving and shape note singing. Proud of her Scottish heritage, she had a great zest for life, and was most passionate about singing. She was also keen on working word puzzles, playing piano, and cards. Always on the go with her ”the more the merrier’ outlook, Marianne delighted in living, and brought much laughter and happiness to those who knew her. She is survived by her loving and devoted husband, Eugene Costello; son, Brian Costello; daughters Sharon Costello and Kathleen Walsh James; five beautiful grandchildren: Elizabeth and Emily MacCready; Carlos, Samantha, and Mayra Walsh; all of the greater Seattle area. Other. survivors are her brother, Wayne M. Edge of Winchester, VA; niece Suzanne Edge Ryan Dave ofMD; and nephew, Bruce A. Campbell Margaret ofEI Cajon, CA. She was predeceased by her parents and sisters Virginia Bray Leslie of Bethesda, MD; Elizabeth Campbell Leonard of San Diego, CA; Margaret Barnhardt Larry of New York, NY; their spouses, and sister-in-law Frances Edge. She also leaves old friends and many cousins from the Washington, DC area, along with numerous friends :&om St. Elizabeth’ s Episcopal Church and the surrounding communities of Normandy Park and Seattle, W A. Memorial Services will be held on Sunday, March 9 at 2 PM, at St. Elizabeth’s Episcopal Church, 1005 SW 152nd St., Burien, WA 98166; Reverend Elisabeth Seeger, officiating. Interment will be at Tahoma National Cemetery, Kent, W A. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Elizabeth’s Episcopal Church or the Highline Chapter of the American Association of University Women. ‘A fond kiss and then we sever; a farewell and then forever!’ – Robert Burns.
