Shizu Hikida

January 6, 1920 - July 14, 2013

Obituary

Shizu Hikida passed away peacefully at home on July 14, 2013 at the age of 93.  Shizu was born on January 6, 1920 in Seattle, WA.  She attended Broadway High School, and worked at the VA Hospital on Beacon Hill as a Surgical Secretary for many years.  She enjoyed going salmon fishing with her husband and son in Puget Sound, and taking annual trips for over twenty years to Sekiu to fish with family and friends.  She always seemed to catch the biggest and most fish.  Shizu had a wonderful gift for cooking, baking, and making various arts and crafts.  She made delicious home cooked meals, an assortment of delicate chocolates, and many varieties of manju.  And if she saw a craft she liked, she was quick to figure out how to make and perfect it.  Shizu had a generous heart, and shared her talents by often making things for others to enjoy, and teaching others how to make things.  In retirement, Shizu continued to enjoy local salmon fishing, and also enjoyed taking long road trips along the West Coast, and throughout Canada with friends and family.  Shizu loved learning new things, so the computer became one of her outlets.  She really loved being a Grandma, spending time with her grandchildren, and especially enjoyed supporting them at all their sports activities.  Shizu had enjoyed a long and independent life up until June of last year.  She was experiencing declining heart and lung issues, and went on home hospice care at that time until her passing.  Shizu continued to try to stay active, doing an assortment of small craft projects, and using her IPad to play games, watch videos, and email.  Her generous heart, energy, attention to detail, creativity and smile will be greatly missed.  We are thankful for all the wonderful memories, and the comfort of knowing she placed her faith in Jesus, and is in heaven.

Shizu was preceded in death by sister Akiko Kiyonaga, and brothers Kazuo Tatsumi, Kenji Matori.  She is survived by her husband Albert, son Martin (Lisa), daughter Allicyn Tasaka (Gary), grandchildren Brandon, Tyler, Ryan, brother Mitsuo Kawachi (Kazzie), and many nephews and nieces.

She has requested that there be no service or celebration of her life.  Also at her request, remembrances may be made to Cornerstone Christian Fellowship 13240 NE 20th Street, Suite 19A, Bellevue WA 98005.

I am so sorry to learn of the loss of Shiz. I remember when our families went to Las Vegas together and how much fun we had playing the slot machines. We both put more money in than took home! I really enjoyed her delicious manju. Thank you for accepting my son Gary into your family as much as we enjoy Allicyn in our family in Hawaii. My thoughts and prayers are with Albert and Martin.

Love, Gladys

So sorry to read of Mrs. Hikida’s passing. Will remember fondly our basetball trips to California back in the days when Martin, Scott and the boys shot hoops together.

Praying that God will comfort you in this time of loss. May you draw closer to one another and have sweet memories of a life well lived. Take care Al, Allicyn and Mike. She will be missed.

With heartfelt sympathy,
