Stanley Henry Saloy, Sr.

November 21, 1924 - October 25, 2011

Obituary

Stanley Henry Saloy, Sr.

Stanley was born on November 21, 1924 in New Orleans, Louisiana to the union of Milton Saloy and Leanore Broyard, and died October 25, 2011 at his home in Seattle, WA at the age of 86 years.  Stanley was preceded in death by his wife Melrene, his mother Leanore, father Milton, sister Clara, and daughter Patricia.

Stanley attended St. Augustine High School in New Orleans, and also served in the US Navy from 1943 to 1946.

Stanley started out as a hod carrier back in the late 1940’s where he was trained by his uncle.  Within a short period of time his uncle started teaching Stanley to lay bricks so he could get into the union where in those days, the power at that time didn’t welcome bricklayers who had not completed the apprenticeship program, but with the on the job training and guidance, Stanley and his uncle would eventually decide to go around the policies and politics and got into the union.  Stanley made foreman in 1950 and held that status for the next 22 years, working for other contractors.

From 1972 – 1995 Stanley became and owned his own company, “Saloy Construction” as a Masonry Contractor where he built many sites that are still standing: the Federal Office Building downtown Seattle on 2nd Ave., the Garfield High School expansion, Wendy’s Restaurants on Rainier Ave. and Aurora Ave., the V.A. Hospital vent box, Rainier Plaza (now known as Safeway), and the King County Aquatics Center in Federal Way.  In the midst of all this he still found time to accomplish other things like owning a Semi-Pro Basketball team named SALOY CONSTRUCTION.  This team would do very well, taking 3rd place in the Renton Roadrunners Tournament, taking 2nd place in the Larry Wilkens Tournament, and then winning it all in the 1978 -79 Championship.  In 1985 he ended joint ventures with Lund Masonry but before he left they accomplished these jobs together: The Bellevue Square Nordstrom, the stands at the University of Washington Football Stadium, the Youth Detention Center on 12th Ave., the Clallam Bay Correction Center, the Washington State Convention and Trade Center in downtown Seattle, and the Promenade 23 shopping center on 23rd and Jackson.  During that time he received many, many awards that would show his accomplishments in business as a Dynamic Entrepreneur; this would eventually make him a living legend.

Family and friends may pay their condolences on Wednesday, November 9, 2011 from 2:00 – 5:00 pm at Bonney-Watson Funeral Home, 1732 Broadway, Seattle, WA 98122, (206)-322-0013.  Funeral Services will be held Thursday, November 10, 2011 at 11:00 am, with viewing from 10:00 – 10:45 am all at Mount Zion Baptist Church, 1634 19th Ave., Seattle, WA 98122, (206)-322-6500.

I worked for Stan in the 1980’s on several projects, including the WA Convention Center.

He was one of the most positive employers I have ever worked for. I valued his friendship and mentoring over the years..

Stan will be missed by the masonry community.

Stanley:

I am very pleased I spent some time with you in May. It was a wonderful visit.

I have great respect for you. I will never forget how loving and caring you and Sis Melrene were to me when I got hit by a car in Seattle. I witnessed the love between you and I carry that memory with me to this day.

When it’s all said and done for me here, I know I’ll see all of you up there, so until then, “keep it movin’ Lucky #13”! Peace, Faith and Always Love….

Stan,

I miss your laugh and wit, we could sure use it now in the industry. Save me some of those gold bricks you guys are laying up there, say hi to my dad for me and I look forward to seeing you again.I suppose there are no fishing limits there, but save me some of those too!

I met Mr. Saloy when we moved to 33rd Ave S in Mt Baker. He was always Mr. Saloy to me – even though we became good friends. To me it was a sign of respect.

Words don’t capture how special he was, how many people he touched and how much he will be missed. I learned a lot from Mr Saloy, and life will be very different without him.

I am sorry for your loss, but celebrate a life well lived. I will cherish my memories of him forever.

Please accept my deepest sympathies.

Dear Saloy Family,

We offer our condolences to y’all for the loss of your loving Father. While we have lived in the neighborhood for less than ten years, we felt blessed to know Stan and witness his youthful attitude and energy — always giving us hello, a wave and smile every time we walked his home. Stan’s life achievements were many and we were blessed to know him.

Stan, This is Stan, I want to wish you a safe trip to old St. Peters gate and the heavenly host that awaits. I enjoyed working with you as a supplier of masonry materials. We had many a good time on and off the job site. You were a dam straight shooter, and a pretty good fisherman. You left a legacy of children and grand children in the industry, along with your mark of doing business right. I consider it a pleasure to have work with you.

The community has lost a giant who fought and sacraficed to make to the road easier for other black contractors and those seeking equity in the field of construction. Mr. Saloy’s humor

and candor will truly be missed by those fortunate enough to

have had the opportunity to cross his path. God bless the Saloy family.

Pops (Stanley) the father of Eric Saloy who’d dance like Micheal Jackson throughout the 70s and 80s to present was in a singing group called “Airamis” and Pop would drive us in the Black Community Parade on the back of one of his flatbed “expensive” truck we us to say. Stanley Saloy will always be remembered one good way or another:)

Stanley will surly be missed.

God Bless Pops

I’m Free

Don’t grieve for me, for now I’m free

I’m following the path God has laid you see.

I took His hand when I heard him call

I turned my back and left it all.

I could not stay another day

To laugh, to love, to work, to play.

Tasks left undone must stay that way

I found that peace at the close of day.

If my parting has left a void

Then fill it with remembered joy.

A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss

Oh yes, these things I too will miss.

Be not burdened with times of sorrow

I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow.

My life’s been full, I savored much

Good friends, good times, a loved one’s touch.

Perhaps my time seemed all too brief

Don’t lengthen it now with undue grief.

Lift up your hearts and peace to thee

God wanted me now; He set me free

Saloy family – I am so sorry for your loss. I’m sending prayers of comfort and strength to you in this hard time. I know there aren’t words to express the pain you’re going through right now. Your dad was truly a Seattle legend, and the neighborhood just won’t be the same without him. It feels like all my life I’ve been waving to him as he drove by in his truck and shouting “Hi Mr. Saloy!” It makes me sad that I’ll never see him again.

Eric, Jeffrey and Stan Jr. – We moved next door to your Dad in April 1998 amd enjoyed getting to know him over the past 13 and a half years. Stan was a keen observer, we appreciated his insights on everything from national politics to the ups and downs of the Mariners and Seahawks. We love this neighborhood, and Stan’s good nature, good humor and thoughfulness were a strong part of what made this neighborhood so enjoyable. We will miss Stan and keep him in our hearts. Our condolences to you.

Saloy family,

I was so sorry to hear of your loss. I remember when your family lived a block from us on 24th Avenue. I knew the kids better than I did Mr. Saloy but my heart goes out to you in your loss.
