Steven Ray Horton

Obituary
Steven Ray Horton, born November 22, 1960, died May 17, 2015 in Burien, Washington. Steve is survived by his parents, Ray and Sue Horton, sister, Connie Horton, wife, Susan Horton, children Craig and Katie Horton, Philip Horton, Jana and Taylor Wattenberg and granddaughter Cora.
Steve left a legacy of love for his family, animals, Husky football, coaching little league and generosity to all. Steve was so loved and valued by his family. He was blessed to have wonderful grandparents in his life including “Gram” who had fresh baked cookies ready for him every day after school. His Grandma and Grandpa Horton from Randle, WA, loved it when Steve came to visit. Grandma Horton always made homemade chicken and noodles for Steve. That was his favorite meal of all time and loved it when his mom conquered the recipe and carried on the tradition.
Steve attended Highline High School, class of ’79. He went on to Seattle University and earned a degree in Finance. His first job was examining banks all over the Northwest and California. He moved on to the Federal Home Loan Bank of Seattle where he rose through the ranks and became Bank President and CEO. After 25 years with the bank, he decided to retire and enjoy some golfing, traveling and consulting.
Some of Steve’s greatest times were traveling with the church youth to orphanages in Mexico and elsewhere. The youth, orphans and stray animals were always drawn to him by his gentle spirit and kindness. When his sister became a foster mom to three precious kids, the kids loved to come over and see Steve. He was never afraid to get on the floor and play at their level. He adored his granddaughter Cora and beamed when she called him ‘Papa’. No matter the role he was put in, he was always a mentor.
This precious man is finally at peace and resting in the arms of Jesus! He will be truly missed.
Steve was not only a cousin to me, but a dear and special friend. He was always happy to see me, and never rushed in conversation. We often would reminisce about our childhood: going to the ocean with the families; making each other laugh so much that Steve spit orange soda pop across the dining room table; and just plain, unspoiled fun. As an adult, he always invited me and my family into his home with open arms. Steve, I know you are in a better place, surrounded by love and peace. We will meet again. Until then, hugs and love from your cousin.
I worked with Steve at the Seattle bank for many years. He was a good man with a kind heart who I could always count on and trust. Steve left this world far too early. I will miss Steve.
My heartfelt sympathies to Steve’s family. I can only imagine your sorrow and hope that with time you find the peace and joy that I know Steve would so much want for all of you..
Life is fragile and the uncertainty of tomorrow must push us all to appreciate the now.
Good bye my friend.
Chuck

Steve, I am glad to have finally met you at Nativity. It was something to learn we went to the same high school, graduating only a year apart. I wish you could have been here longer. Had another chance to talk. Or just say “hi”.
My sympathies to the entire family. We shared Cora as our grandchild, as Steve’s son Craig is married to my daughter Katie. He loved that little girl. Peace be with you all.

I met Steve when my good friend Connie brought him to Nativity Lutheran Church. Steve was a pleasant person and we welcomed him a the Church. We looked forward to seeing each week to worship with us.
