Obituary

Sue D. (Durden) Amundson

Sue D. (Durden) Amundson passed away peacefully, Thursday, September 11, 2014, at Northwest Hospital in Seattle, WA, just three months shy of her 90th birthday. Sue was born to Susie (Daughtry) and Jesse N. Durden on December 10th, 1924 in Fort Pierce, Fl.

At 22, Sue married Stanton “Whitey” Oleen Amundson from Minnesota, a merchant marine, who preceded Sue in death, in 1990, after 42 years of marriage.  Sue is also preceded in death by her older brothers, Jesse N. Durden and Lamar Durden, and her youngest daughter Penny Mae Amundson.

Sue, who had a head for business, accounting and management, started working right out of Collins High School (GA). Sue soon established personal credit and prided herself in the purchase of a house in Collins, which she shared with her parents and two younger sisters. As Sue’s life progressed, she chose seasonal work so when “Whitey”, who became a Captain, came home from sea, they could travel. “Whitey’s” career moved the family to Seattle in 1966.  Once in Seattle, Sue decided to do income tax preparation in the spring and, in the fall, manage the Frederick and Nelson Santa Photo Booth, which she continued to do even after Frederick’s closed it’s doors. Sue was a 22 year volunteer, in the gift shop, at Northwest Hospital. Sue will be forever remembered as the woman who made ribbon crosses to be given away or sold in the gift shop.

Sue is survived by her two younger sisters, Anne Schaaf of Virginia and Betty “B” (Gene) Knecht of North Carolina, as well as many loving and close nieces and nephews.  Also surviving her are her two remaining daughters, Toni Sue (James R) Keller and Angela Nancy (Therese “Trish” M Rindo) Amundson; her only granddaughter (Toni’s daughter) Megan Elizabeth Keller and Megan’s children (Sue’s two great-grandchildren), Crystal Rose Keller and Elizabeth Sofia Keller.

Sue is also survived by her faithful companion of 13 years; her one-eyed, diabetic poodle, Romeo.

Sue’s family is honoring her life with a gathering on Monday September 22nd, from 11 am to 1pm at Wiggen & Sons Funeral Home, 2003 NW 57th Street, Seattle, WA 98107, (206) 782-4700.  Followed at 2pm by an informal graveside ceremony at Purdy & Walters at Floral Hills, 409 Filbert Road, Lynnwood, WA 98036, (425) 672-1800.

My heart goes out to Angie, Trish, Toni, Jim, Megan, Crystal Rose and Elizabeth. We are all going to miss your Mom and Grandma. She was the most generous person I’ve ever known. May God Bless and be with all of you through this most difficult time.
