Obituary
November 3, 1948 – December 18, 2024
Susan (Sue/Mrs. Cowan to her many students, 76 yrs.) passed away on Wednesday, December 18, 2024, in Des Moines, Washington. She will be sincerely missed by her loving family, devoted friends, and all of the wonderful individuals who knew and loved her.
Susan was an award winning and passionate schoolteacher who taught elementary school students in the Renton School District for nearly 50 years. She would proudly say “I’ve taught 1,000 children how to read.” She also had a drive for encouraging creativity and would teach her kids to crochet, stitch, play guitar, sing, and perform. She was very proud to be a teacher as it is such a rewarding profession. Indeed, she would be greeted years later by former students with a, ‘Hello Mrs. Cowan!’
Susan’s loved and heartfelt hobbies were sewing/crocheting, music, reading, and traveling with her mother. Sue sewed many clothes for her daughters when they were young, was a master quilter, and could also knit and crochet. She could read music easily and was an exceptional piano player-from ragtime to classical, to boogie boogie; her playing would always command an entire room. She also played acoustic guitar. Sue loved reading and would sometimes be found reading a mystery book and watching a true crime television show at the same time!
Susan and her mother Lorraine were very close throughout her life and spent much time traveling together. They especially enjoyed cruises where they could dine, buy jewelry, and enjoy the sights. Susan’s mother and best friend passed just two years ago. They are now reunited in heaven where she is surely telling stories and playing music.
Sue is survived by daughters Christine and Jennifer and grandchildren Booker, Abigail, Alex, and Ava.

I have so many great memories of all the fun times we had together. I miss her phone calls and our lunches at Olive Garden.
Much gratitude to her for all the different art forms I got to learn in her class, which inspired a career and lifelong passion for the arts and teaching for me ❤️
