Obituary
Susan Marie Butler, age 60, passed away peacefully on October 30, 2018 with her sisters at her side. Susan was born on December 28, 1957 in Seattle to Joseph and Rosemarie Butler. Susan attended and graduated from Seattle Public Schools in 1978, shortly after the passage of the Education for All Handicapped Children Act. Susan was an early part of a momentous equal rights movement for people with disabilities that all children enjoy today.
Susan’s work career began at Olympus Electronics and after many years, she transitioned to community-based work experiences at St. Therese School in Seattle and Highline College Community and Employment Services. Her contributions went well beyond her daily work tasks. She always brought wit and determination, a ready smile and unconditional kindness to all of whom she encountered. Susan truly lived life to the fullest through simple pleasures; enjoying family, snacking, watching movies, music and socializing with others.
Susan was predeceased in death by her father. She is survived by her mother, brothers Michael Butler (Deanna) and Tom Butler (Kathleen), sisters Carol Ballata (Joe) and Lori Pollett (Dennis). She is also survived by her precious nieces and nephews: Courtney, Lexi, Savanah, Joey, Noelle, Daniella and Kyle.
A celebration of her life will be held at 10 AM on Saturday, November 17th, at St. Edward Catholic Church, 4212 S. Mead Street, Seattle followed by a small gathering immediately after the service. Burial will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Holyrood Catholic Cemetery in Shoreline. Those who wish to remember Susan in a special way may make gifts in her memory to any of the organizations supporting Down Syndrome. We are especially grateful to Evergreen Hospice Care Center staff for their expert comfort and care in gracefully assisting Susan on the final steps of her journey.
So sorry to hear of Susie’s passing. Heaven has gained another angel.
Lori, know that we walk with you on this journey of faith. Susie couldn’t have asked for a better family to have surrounded her with love and kindness for so many years. Take care my friend.
Remembering Susie fondly from our days together at Olympus – always a smile, always a gentle pat on the hand. Peace be with all of you. Susie was well loved.
Dear Butler Family,
I had the honor of working with Susan at Olympus. She taught me so much during the years we worked together. I’ll always remember her sweet smile and gentle ways.
I never had the pleasure of meeting Susan, but I did have the honor of working with her sister, Lori, who worked tirelessly for the equal rights of others with disabilities. I am quite certain that Susan was an inspiring force behind this lifelong work.
My condolences to the family at the loss of this beloved member of your family.

I am sorry for your loss. I never met Susan but am responding on behalf of my deceased sister Monica. Monica told me she held a special fondness for Susan when she was aquainted with the family in the late 1980’s through the year 2000. She often spoke of Susan’s bright light-her smile and love of dolls. Monica enjoyed bringing balloons to the house to brighten Susans day. Susan always had a smile and an attentive demeanor. Bless her soul. May the Sacraments she recieved gain her the Kingdom of Heaven.
