Obituary
Vivian Roene Norman (nee Hespack) died after a four-year battle with lung cancer on May 8, 2015. A member of a pioneer family on the Oregon Coast, Roene was born in Cutler City, in a house on Drift Creek. Her parents were Albert and Mary (Alinger) Hespack, long-time Lincoln City residents. Roene graduated from Taft High School in the class of 1951. Her class was the first to graduate in the new High School building although they had never attended classes there.
Roene married Warren E. (Bud) Norman of Newberg in 1955. She was his main support system as his career as a pilot in the U.S. Air Force sent them around the world. They spent three years in Japan, four years in Germany, and later assignments in places including California, Virginia and Oklahoma. Bud flew two tours as a fighter pilot in Vietnam while Roene cared for their two daughters, Kristy and Linda. Together this close knit family moved around the world in service to the country and in support of each other.
Roene and Bud Norman spent their last 32 years in Auburn, Washington. They made many trips to Lincoln City. She attended recent class reunions held by Deborah (Mitchell) Patton and was in touch with members of her graduating class.
Roene was a gracious and wise woman who loved a good meal, a glass of wine and laughter with her family and friends. She had a soft spot for cats and Seattle sports teams. Roene was a keen observer and would share her wisdom with those who sought it. She leaves a strong legacy of a loving family, including Kristy Borchart and her husband Barry, and Linda Norman and her husband Dan Satterberg. Roene’s three grandchildren, Brooke Borchart, James Satterberg and Katie Satterberg were fortunate to feel their grandmother’s unconditional love and support.
Roene is also survived by her sister Evelyn Phelps, who lives near the original Hespack homestead on Drift Creek.
That is a beautiful tribute to a beautiful woman. I feel so blessed to have enjoyed so many celebrations with Roene. The Sunday dinners, holidays and birthday celebrations were always brighter because of her smile and laugh. She was such a caring woman and adored her family. She always looked perfect! My heart goes out to her family and I will miss her greatly.
