Obituary

Wallace Kenneth Meyers, passed away December 28, 2018 at the age of 97.  He lived a full life and was deeply loved.  Wally was born November 11, 1921 in Estevan, Saskatchewan.  He later moved to Minneapolis where he grew up with his 5 brothers and 2 sisters and graduated from North High School and the University of Minnesota.  His WWII service included work on the Manhattan Project in Omaha, Nebraska, followed by active duty service in Guam.  He received the WWII Victory Medal. As a professional civil engineer, he worked on numerous important hydraulic projects to prevent flooding and enhance living for countless numbers of people.  Wally married Ellen Hartwig in 1948 in Minneapolis where they began their family of five daughters.  After living in Ephrata for a short time, where he worked on the Columbia Basin Reclamation Project, he settled in Seattle and worked for and later retired from the Army Corp of Engineers.  After Ellen passed away in 1970, Wallace ventured to work in Italy and Germany and later married Edith Volkert.  Together they shared many travel adventures in Europe, Mexico, and throughout the United States.

Wally was a family man of strong Christian faith who lived out that faith as a peacemaker.  He patiently offered encouragement and shared his happy enthusiasm for life with those he met.  Wally was a long-time member and elder of Lake Burien Presbyterian Church.   He loved baseball, curling, lawn bowling, bocce ball, and was an avid bridge player.

Wally is survived by his brother, Robert Meyers, 5 daughters Judy Penick (Pete), Ruth Anne Bell (Ron), Marie Meyers, Debra Kent (Clifford), Lois Meyers and 2 step-children, Carol Louise Hadlock and Brian Volkert.  He is also survived by 8 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life will take place at Wesley Terrace in Des Moines, WA on January 12, 2019.  Memorials gifts may be given to Wesley Homes.

It was indeed a pleasure to have known Marie’s Dad in the past several years. Learning more about his past shows him to be someone that cared and acted for others in a selfless way. He was surely a great man and we are sure he will leave a large empty spot in the hearts of his wonderful family.
