Walter A. Opland
April 27, 1930 – September 19, 2005
Walter Opland, a resident of Des Moines, WA, and formerly of Minot and Des Lacs, ND, passed away Monday, September 19, 2005, of congestive heart failure in a nursing home in Des Moines, WA.
Visitation will be held the afternoon of September 22 and the morning of September 23 at Washington Memorial Park, Seattle, WA, with a private graveside service following the burial on Friday, September 23, at Washington Memorial Park. Arrangements are by Bonney-Watson Funeral Directors, Seattle, WA.
Walter was born on April 27, 1930, to Carl and Agnes Opland in Minot, ND. He grew up on a farm south of Des Lacs, ND, graduated from Des Lacs High School in 1947, and attended Minot State College.
On April 28, 1952, Walter married Catherine C. Dostert Opland in Foxholm, ND. They farmed in Des Lacs until moving to Minot in 1959, where he worked at Dakota Drug for 10 years. He then worked for Sears, and started building homes in Minot. In 1983, he and his wife relocated to Seattle, WA, to be near their three daughters. He worked for Scientific Supply in Seattle until his retirement in 1994.
Walter had numerous friends in the Minot and Seattle areas. He bowled with the F.B. Becker Company in Minot for many years. He was an active member of the Elks Club and the Knights of Columbus in Minot. He enjoyed many activities such as golf, baseball, fishing, and hunting. Walter also sang with a quartet made up of family members. He was active in the Men’s Bible Club at Brooklake Community Church in Federal Way, WA, until his health declined.
Walter will be missed dearly by his wife, Catherine, and his four children: Rose Opland, Auburn, WA; Reed Michelle Opland, Des Lacs, ND; Lorene Jeff Yurak, Sumner, WA; and Karla Jeff Grogan, Des Moines, WA. He also is survived by nine grandchildren, Michael Nicole, Patrick Melissa, Benjamin Heather, Nancy Catherine, Jefferson, and John Opland, all of Des Lacs, ND; and Aaron Walter, Andrew, and Adam Hanson, all of Sumner, WA; two great-grandchildren, Leya Opland of Minnesota, and Annie Opland, Des Lacs, ND; and his sister, Claudia Opland of Covina CA.

Sorry about the loss of Walter. Judy and I will keep you in our prayers. I still have great memories of your wonderful family when we all lived on 23rd street in Minot. You have our deepest sympathy. Love Gregg and Judy.
We would like you all to know that you have been in our thoughts this week. Mike really wanted to come to Washington to be with his Grandma, aunts, and his dad. He has had a hard time staying here and not being there for all of you. Mike has many fond memories of his grandpa from when he lived in Minot and even from the trips Walt made back to North Dakota. One of the things I love the most that Cathy and Walt both did is mail cards. We can always count on a card in the mail a week before our birthdays, anniversary, and Christmas. Those little things will never be forgotten. Our deepest sympathies-
Mike, Nicole, and Annie
Michelle, Reed and Family, So sorry to hear about your loss.
I was saddened to hear about “Mr. Opland’s” passing. Your family will be in my family’s thoughts and prayers. I’ll never forget the great times from back home. It’s been a long time, but I do remember Walter as always having a smile to give. Carol and I always send a memorial to Bishop Ryan to be applied to our son Nathan’s Scholarship fund. We will be doing so in Walt’s memory. Chuck and Carol Kasper

Our sympathies are with you and your family.
We remember our visits when we visited from California and later when we moved to Minot. Bill did much reminiscing about high school days in DesLacs.
Our prayers are with all of you as you miss Walt.
We love you and our thoughts and prayers are with you.
We are thinking of you and praying for you. Walter was a good and caring man, and showed a strong faith. May happy memories be some comfort at this very tough time.
